Uh-oh….a muzzle?

    About a week ago I had to take my b-baby to the vet and that was obviously not the place she wanted to be. I get in the office and nurse evaluates her and it comes for her to go to the back and take a heartworm test. The nurse goes to pick her up and Zoe lets out this horrific growl and snaps at the nurse! It happened so fast and I was so suprised because she had never done that before. It was so sad to see this little 20lb dog with a muzzle on. I know shes not a mean dog but I know she was scared. Has your basenji ever did that?

    You just need to condition her that the Vet's office is a good place (most times)… take her there for just a visit and have the office staff (and the nurse that evaluates) give her treats....

    I would guess that maybe she had some "not" so nice times at a Vets office

    I take my baby puppies to the Vet all the time... just for visits... I go at lunch time and the office staff has a ball with them along with the Vet Techs and any of the Dr's that are not in surgery....

    Pat is right, have the dog learn that treats and vets can go together.

    It may not have been your puppies fault at all. The tech should give the dog time to meet them and sniff them before grabbing them. I would definately take the dog back just for treats and attention so she realizes the vets office is not bad.

    When I was taking Dallas to the vet for all his puppy shot series I packed a little baggie of his favorite treats & anytime the vet or the vet tech would go to touch him I would have them give him a treat. Eventually he got the point that the vets touching him was good. He did incredibly well during all of his appointments - no noise except a little tiny yelp when the shots went in :) I was a proud momma!

    We had to muzzle one of ours for a while after a new vet tech tried to give the Kennel Cough vaccine (which they HATE!) and held the thing in front of his nose for quite some time while trying to align it. This made him scared and growl a little like they do. She also was a little scared by the sound he made and he sensed that.

    IT was not made worse by the fact that in spite of my asking them not to, some of the techs would walk from the back door with the muzzle, holding it out for him to see. This made it worse as all he saw was something he did not like coming at him for a long ways away.

    Eventually he would growl at anyone wearing scrubs.

    It took us quite a while to get him back to being able to be treated without a muzzle by working with the vet directly.

    rockys gotta be muzzled at the vet. he growls the ENTIRE time and the vet knows its him and asks us to put it on for them before he'll even TOUCH him.

    Have you worked with him to make the Vets a happier place? Taken him there for a visit when he didn't need anything to be done? …..

    well he's fine with everyone BUT the vet himself. its not like hes angry when we go to the actual office. then again he just doesnt like to be touched and seems a bit bipolar to me.

    ( he really is a basket case. hes attacked my hands, severely, drawing blood and causing brusing, twice last week without being provoked at all )

    wow! nic memories! Here on my city my sister cant belive that people even stop theirs cars to ask "what breed is your dog"? some people get pictures with the cellphone or with their tablets so a walk with my girls on the downtown is a secure chit chat with the people. A remember 3 ladies, they were so amazing! Maca dont put so much atention on people specially girls, but those ladies was talking to Maca saying she was sooo pretty sooo sweet sooo everything and Maca start to bend those ears and make noises they were more happy and carry on and Maca more and more sweet Whilw They was saying Maca was soo sweet and bla bla and i was thinking.. ha! she is a little naughty and sometimes so dominant.. but that day Maca plays her role to perfection. She deserves a Oscar.. Other day she was confused with a male chihuahua, a lady ask if we can breed our dogs, i said, well is a SHE and is not a chihuahua, the woman start to apologize i dont care well.. i dont like Maca be confused with a male dog, but was funny at the end. But on general people use to think they are like foxies or pitbull or little deer. I said to some kids that i was ironing the tale all days to get curled. They believe it and i was worried they try to iron his own dog, so i said that noooo! that was natural and ironing a dogs tale is a ugly idea. Oh one day i lef Maca with the policeman at the bakerys door ( he was at my sight anyway) and when i was out i found the man with several people asking him if was a police dog or some kind of new police dog because looks so nice and so naughty hahha The poor man have no words and just was smiling while the people was taking picture of him and the dog. lol So the last time that i walked with my sister she was wow! i cant believe it.. the people stoped to ask what breed is.. Yes, my girls are used to some fame.. and i like they socialize with the kids.. not so much with the grown people and with so many thief getting his eyes on pure breed doggies not so nice but well… i said the are naughty some times.

    @dash: Thanks! We went right after X-mas. We ended up using someone from Craigslist. She was wonderful. I actually have 1 Basenji, 1 Beagle and currently 2 foster Basenjis. So it is a house full. Oh!!! I didn't see the date on your initial e-mail!!! A bit slow, I suppose….;). Oh well - for future reference.....:)

    This entire thread is hysterical. (Sorry, Tucker…I guess it wasn't funny while cleaning up) I have tears in my eyes. Thanks for making me laugh! Glad to know he's doing well. I've been there quite a few times myself, but usually it's limited to the dining room rug. Can't wait to throw that sucker out...

    Thank you JoeyQ for getting this thread back on topic :) Not that puppy mill/responsible breeding isn't a good thread… :p and there might be one on this very forum. Nice to see so many Basenjis that go against (somewhat) the stereo-types. I feel lucky because Jenny was a 7 month old shelter dog - stray - and really must have had a good upbringing because she has always been very handle-able (one of my friends picked her up and stacked her show dog style the first time he met her) and really only fussed (like the dickens!) in the crate the first night or two. I would remind those who are having difficulty crating: your emotions are a factor in how your dog reacts and adapts. The stress of hearing their cries, and worse, often puts an owner on edge enough to subtly (and often not so subtly to most dogs) encourage the behavior. Earplugs help.:o
