• Just noticed this ad, looks like it was posted almost 2 weeks ago so maybe someone knows more about this girl. We're not quite ready for B#2 and thinking a boy to go with our girl, but I hate to think about a 6 year old basenji girl being homeless…:(

  • Interesting…

says she is good with children, but then that she is too territorial for a young child.

And ... free? free?? FREE???? And they think they're going to get someone who carefully has researched the breed?

sigh. I wish I could help.

    How about BRAT in Modesto?

  • I don't see BRAT in Modesto - they have Karen's info at Medfly in Acton – or is that close to Modesto and that's who you mean?

Yeah, I'm confused by the "gets along with kids" but "too territorial for a young child" too.

  • Oh, and we did get Fiji free from someone who had to re-home her and ran an ad. We had researched the breed extensively and been visited by someone who works with Karen at Medfly rescue when I came across the ad. So this kind of thing can have a happy ending, but maybe we were the exception.

  • At least they took the time and effort to tell perspective owners to research the breed first…they also said they would be picky with new owners...lets hope thats true and this dog can find a nice second home!

  • I wonder if they have contacted the dog's breeder. And BRAT does have a coordinator in Northern California.

  • @Jylly18:

Well, yeah… but remember Harley, the Basenji boy we bought and placed?
His owner said she was going to be picky too, didn't want to give him to just anybody. But when it came down to it, she met us in a parking lot with nothing but his leash and our word that my friend would be a good owner. That's it, so.... I'm cynical.

    Hopeful, but cynical.

  • Yes, I wonder if they have contacted the breeder (of course could be the guy in Oakdale…) but might be someone who really did have a contract that the dog was supposed to go back to the breeder.

And yes, BRAT has Northern Ca contacts

  • When I responded and asked for more info, didn't think to ask if they had contacted the breeder. This is some of what he told me:

"She's spayed, but she is from a line of champions… Bushbabies line in fact..but we never wanted to show her, or breed her. She was just part of the family
...the reason I need to get rid of her... I have a 14 month old son, and (she) can get aggressive with him. He thinks she's the funniest thing in the world, but sometimes if she walks by him and he touches her, she'll snap and growl. And, if she's sleeping, she will snap at anyone who startles her awake. I just can't take the chance of her biting my son. She's nipped him a couple of times already, but hasn't drawn any blood."

He also sent a few pix and she's lovely, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get them out of his email to post here.

  • If she is from Bushbabies, then she has a contract with Terri …. She needs to call her breeder...

do you have her direct email? Or a phone number? Name? If you go to my website www.tanzabasenjis.net you can send me an email direct with the information. I will also call Terri

  • I hope Terri hears of this b and contacts them asap.
I posted this info to BRAT in Ca. so hopefully, someone will go get her soon.

If you posted to BRAT, I hope if they hear they call Terri?… I have my doubts

  • Pat, we are mandated to contact the known breeders and if a BRAT rep feels they shouldn't, they have to present a very strong case to the board.
We do try very hard to get dogs back to known breeders.
As most breeders want to know and will take the dogs back, its a win/win for everyone.

  • Oh, 2 posts, sorry about that.

  • Yes, I know that, however there has been times when they have not because the breeder uses a kennel situation… which Terri does... and I don't believe that is BRAT's choice to decide or the person giving up the dog. Just an opinion... and an observation from past experience

I did send an email to the person that placed the ad with Terri's contact information

  • Pat, I sent you their direct email too - hope it all works out.

  • The Ca BRAT folks are working on this as well, so hopefully we will have some word soon.
I don't know Terri, but in my experence , the only time BRAT has not returned a dog to a breeder is when its a known puppymiller.
I am assuming Terri doesn't fall into this catagory.
I know some of the larger breeders do use kennels…

  • Pat, did you tell Terri one of her dogs might be given away free?

As I said that I would before, I left Terri a message and email the person with the dog with Terri's infomation for them to contact Terri directly since there was no phone number. Terri doesn't do email very often.
