Rugosa Basenjis

Breeder Talk
  • Does anyone know what happened to Rugosa Bs? I check the site periodically just to see what's up and look at her pictures, and apparently there was an accident and they've closed, at least temporarily. I've always loved her site - she's so devoted to the dogs and her pictures are so beautiful. Hope she (they) will be okay.

  • As it says on the website, there was a very bad car accident. Vickie is recovering and doing so much faster than any of her doctors had expected but it will be a long recovery. She is out of the hospital and back home with her family and dogs.

  • Thanks - I'm glad to hear she's doing well.

I talked to Vickie just the other day, and she is doing great. She is still recovering from brain injury related to the accident, but is very much getting back to 'herself'. She does have plans to be breeding again in the future, as long as her recovery continues to progress as well as it is. Good news for all of us, as she is one of the most thoughtful and dedicated breeders involved in the breed that I know :)

  • Thanks so much for the info. I don't know her personally, but it's always been obvious, even through the internet, that she's totally dedicated to the breed and her dogs. I'm very glad that she's doing so well and I hope that she able to continue breeding.

That is great to hear Andrea… thanks for posting it. Parry talks to her quite often too.... and she is a "breeder" to die for... IMO.... you could never go wrong...

  • Thanks for the update, Andrea, haven't read anything on the B-list for a while, and I have always admired Vickie.

She's not a member of the Rip Van Wrinkle Club. I did, however, contact the BBB as well as various scammer websites so others who do research on her name or breeding company don't meet the same fate. Also went ahead and contacted the AKC and BCOA, so hopefully something comes of it.

But the part that you highlighted about in season bitches is not likely to occur at a dog show. I do not allow other dogs at shows to lick my dogs nor do I allow my dogs to lick other dogs at a show. I have not seen any study that shows that an in season bitch is at significantly higher risk than any other dog at a dog show. If you are taking reasonable precautions with your dogs while at a show, I don't see that they are any more likely to contract an infection than the other dogs at the show. Actually, this past year I bred a bitch who came into season early and specifically asked my repro vet about bringing her to show because it would break the major if she did not show. My repro vet said that it was fine as long as I took reasonable precautions like using a crate and not allowing her to explore the grounds with her nose in everything. She whelped a healthy litter of 4.

Everyone pretty much already covered what I was going to say :) I spoke with Toni before I got my boy because I am from Maryland. I ended up going with a breeder in Florida because at the time, that's where I was living. If I were to get another basenji pup though, I would definitely go to Toni. She was so great at answering any/all of my questions & also was very forthcoming about information regarding her dogs & her home. She offered, more than once, for me to come see her dogs while I was back in Maryland for vacation last winter.

Thank you guys so much for the information. I will definately write it as you said. Maybe he will then stop being so ugly. I know that there is no way he will let me or anyone that knows me have her. All I know is I paid him back for the dog, paid to fly it to them and now I get to be rimmed out on the phone, emails, etc. I just love hearing what an irresponsible breeder I am and how much I abused the dog. It just makes me fighting mad to be accused of such things. I love my dogs so much and they live better than I do it seems… Thanks again, you guys are the best.
