Eos not at her top form! (UPDATE)

  • Since a couple of months Eos 6 yo spayed female is lacking energy, I only noticed it when she is racing or lure coursing, she wants to go but her usual speeding galop is not here anymore.
I went first to the vet also a chiroprater thinking she had a back problem, she found the abdominal muscle a bit "tigh" (don't no the english name). But she was still not right.
Then I went back for a blood work, an urine test and nothing abnormal. For the past 2 weeks I have been strip testing her every day and it was negative.
Because nothing changed I have an appointement on wednesday for another blood drawn and urine sample, but this time my vet is sending the samples to a lab in Paris.
She is eating well, drinking ok, not loosing any weight, has a nice shiny coat, she is playfull.
Her fanconi dna test is planed for june. All other health test ok!

Anybody has an idea of what I should tell my vet to look for?

Can Any of you doing full panel thyroid test tell me if their vet is taking only a sample of blood or doing more, I can't get my vet to do more than the T4 test.

    Thank you
    Hélène

Could be she is just getting older… some age faster then others...

About the Thyroid test... sounds like you need to find a different Vet if yours will not do more then the T4... And yes that is all the Vet does is draw the blood just like with any blood test.

  • Have you checked her hips?

But the change as been so quick, in december she was still fast.

As far as changing vet it would be probably easier for me to change of country  as most vet in France don't understand why we want all these tests done as long as the dog doesn't show any sign  and I phoned many vets around here, checked with other b's owner to see if their vet knew something.

    Hips are excellent

  • The lab my vet was sending the blood to for lepto and boreliose was doing full panel thyroïd test then I told her I wanted it done and was I right to do so as the result came back on monday that Eos is hypothyroïdic :( . Then yesterday I came back with her pills. I hope it will work and that she will be her old self soon. :)

Now I know this lab is doing it I have to take my 4 other b's to have their blood drawn, probably not all at the same time as it is awfully expensive.

Not that it is the same thing, BUT my daughter has hypothyroid, and within days of getting on her meds, the change was incredible!
Actually, for a few days it was almost too much – she had so much energy, and was so un-used to having that much energy, that she nearly drove us all nuts! LOL

  • Many, many Basenjis have problems with their Thyroids… you will be surprised how quickly (within days) they will perk up with the pills. What pills did they give you? One thing many of us have found out is that the generic type do not work that well... the regular Soloxine is better

  • The name of the pill is Forthyron as Soloxine is not sold in France.

I will have to check with a lady who now is living in France and has an hypothyrodic basenji what she is giving her. Perhaps if the forthyron is not working I will try to get some soloxine, but untill then fingers crossed!

The dogs have a lure course competition on sunday, I will know then is she is better or not.

  • Yes, there is a Basenji person in France and she does get Soloxine.. but not sure from where.

Dr. Watkins was so impressed with how well the wound looked yesterday that the cone collar is officially off now! Baron is so happy to be rid of that thing and so am I. That was his last check up. Thank you to everyone for your positive vibes, prayers, and well wishes. Basenjimamma, thank you for the tip. I will keep this in mind for any future injuries and wounds. :)

Hugs to Isis… and hopefully the blood gases were done and that Dr. Gonto was able to help you and your Vet with the right protocol program for Isis.... And there is a Fanconi yahoo list for only people with affected dogs. It would really be good for you to join that list. If you seach the yahoo list for Basenjis and Fanconi you should be able to find it.

My girls keep themselves pretty clean. The first heat is usually the messiest, and even then, it isn't too bad. The place I notice it the most is if they sleep in the bed, then I recommend you get a set of DARK sheets and duvet cover ;) I don't care fore the britches, because every female I have used them on got a vaginits infection because they couldn't keep herself clean.

Hi Leel, I know this is a very old post but I just wanted to see if you were still around and had an update on results of the neuro? Our basenji cross, Indy, started doing teeth chattering out of the blue this morning after every yawn. She is female, C. 1 year (we're not sure exactly as she was a street dog). We took her to the vet this morning who also didn't have an answer but doesn't think it's a seizure because all other responses seem fine but I'm freaking out a little. The vet gave us some pain killers to try in case it is something in her mouth but she has had no trouble eating and chewing on bones so this doesn't seem likely. She also didn't seem to be under any undue stress, just tired from sleep in the morning so yawning a lot. Having said this she seemed mopey and didn't come on out bed like normal in the morning so not sure if this points to it being emotional... She seems to have gotten better throughout the day and didn't do it after yawning just now but not sure if this is related to what the vet gave her. I'm very worried as some posts have been talking about it being normal (mostly in males) but in some posts it has been a neurological disorder which has gotten worse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Susie
