    I just recently became a dog owner for the first time and I start looking into dog food brands. I had always thought that a name brand dog food was a good dog food. Wrong!! When I received Roo from the breeder, he was eating Authority. I did some research and came across Whole Dog Journal. They put out a yearly list of good quality dog food.(No corn, byproducts,dyes, etc.)
    I have now switch to Candiae and Merricks. What I relaized is most high quality food is not sold at PetSmart or Petco, but at feed supply stores!
    I recommend checking it out to see your dog food made the cut.

    It was actually through this forum that I came across the world of dog food. I was given tons of info about dog food & finally we decided to begin feeding Dallas Merrick's. We are just now finishing up the Eukanuba that we bought because that is what the breeder was feeding him. I am hoping that Merricks not only tastes better to him but helps clear up the little bit of dry skin he has had over the past week :) I go to a special store to buy the Merrick's but I actually prefer the speciality store over Petsmart since they already know Dallas by name & give him a treat whenever we go :) He's their "favorite" puppy customer!

    What flavor of Merrick's do you use?

    I feed Merricks canned and Candiae dry. Roo loves the Chicken Pot Pie. Its looks like something I would eat. Roo had bad gas on Authority but not anymore:)

    Hm. We're trying the Wilderness Blend. My boyfriend chose it out since he thought it was cool that in the ingrediants it said "buffulo". Think as long as you keep your dog on Merrick's you can switch between the flavors?

    I would think so. My roo has a sentsive stomach but he seems to tolerate Merricks flavors just fine. I only feed him half a can at a time. I try to give him a varatity. On the weekend , I like to boil fresh chicken and mix in brown rice. This is by far his favorite meal.

    Our Basenji has a very sensetive stomach, we tried all kinds of food with him. He would not eat for days, have constant diarreah and constipation. We tried rice and chicken and other human food, but nothing worked.

    Later we learned that basenjis are known to have allergies to grain, corn and other fillers found in generic dog food. We then tried several brands of natural grain free dry and wet dog food and now we have no more issues.

    I went to two health food type pet stores yesterday and asked a bunch of questions about the different types of holistic dog foods and other foods that they had. I came away from both stores with several brochures and tons of food samples!! From one store I got a plastic grocery bag FULL of Timberwolf Organics and from the other store I got a bag full of EVO Innova samples. Enough to feed these guys for more than a week!! I had no idea that you could get samples from the stores!! The dogs seem to love both brands. We're taking it slow though so I can keep track of the reactions. They currently eat Nutro Max Ultra Puppy.

    Logical, not "chicken little the sky is falling" thinking. Thanks DonC. I hate companies being gutted without evidence. And I agree, if I had dogs - especially prone to the disorder -- on just grain-free, I might switch for added protection.

    I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

    @Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

    @agilebasenji: To clarify, I'm not feeding my dogs differently because they are show/performance dogs; I'm feeding them differently because that is what works for the individual. Where I see feeding a dog differently because it is a performance/working dog (NOT a conformation/show dog) is where the dog is burning TONS of calories. Examples would be a working border collie/kepie or, perhaps, a greyhound that is being run many times a week (I don't know how they work things at the track), a working military/border patrol dog that is logging in miles of work daily, etc. My performance/show dogs are more weekend warriors by comparison. Training less than an hour everyday (not that I really train 7 days a week), hardly needs a special diet (IMHO). I will say I feed the basenjis more in the winter than the summer; they need more calories when it's cold. I also cook an egg on show/agility/coursing mornings, but that's because Digital is a picky boy and I need him to having something in his tummy when he's performing in agility/coursing. And it has just sort of carried over even though Miss Zest would never turn down food of any sort. Of course that's not too different from most weekends since I usually cook a big breakfast on Sat and Sun and everyone gets a bite of egg then. However, I will say I know of some people who do feed their current show dogs a better diet than the non-show dogs, which I find very sad. Well put, especially your last comment… I totally agree.... and pets/companions deserve the best we can feed them... no different then show/performace dogs...

    We just switched to Canidae over Nutro Max. We've fed our others Nutro for years and haven't seemed to have a problem, but I'm curious how the dogs would feel if they ate a better mix. Canidae has a very good ingredient list and got a A+ rating on this list! It actually isn't noticeably more expensive per pound than the Nutro we've been getting. A 40# bag was $40. So far they gobble it up, so they must like the taste at least.
