    Hi Anne (by the other bay). We're in downtown San Diego, a 30-40 min drive to Carlsbad. There's a nice dog beach in Del Mar - sort of in between - that might be fun for a meetup. You can email me if you want to put us together. I've not seen our Fiji with another Basenji yet but we're meeting up with a woman I met through the rescue org and her 3 b's weekend after next.

    Dan, I was responding to the post in response to yours that said they knew of a basenji-aware vet in Vista. I was asking for the vet's info: name, number.

    Ah, I see, you PMd Dan- could one of you pass the info to me as well, please? Just rescued our basenji last weekend from Santa Barbara area and we need a local vet - we're in downtown SD. Thanks!

    Took Cairo to Colony Vet. It was an informative visit. Laura is very knowledgeable about B's. I felt very comfortable with her and she listened to my questions. They will be Cairo's vet for now on. Thanks Terry for the info.

    Hi Dan,
    Saw Cairo yesterday at Colony. What a sweetie!!
    We had gone in to get blood drawn on our 2 pups + 1 who lives in San Marcos, as well as 2 of our others. We were causing a Basenji riot in the waiting room! I went to the back to get something and spotted a B in the run. So of course I checked the sign and saw it was "Cairo Lunas." Even in a strange place, with a complete stranger making overtures, he came right up to the gate and let me pet him and make silly noises. Do you have a cat? He was fascinated by Flash, the office cat, who insists that I pet him as long as possible whenever he sees me.
    I'm sure Laura emphasized it, but keep Cairo very quiet, preferably crated as much as possible for the next several days - it will help with swelling and pain.
    Give him a hug from his newest admirer!

    Hi Terry,

    Cairo is really great with people, kids, dogs, and if a cat would let him get near them he would be great with them too. He just loves playing with everybody. We socialize him allot. That is making it hard for us now because even though he is sore and healing from surgery, he just wants to play. He has sooooo much energy to burn off. If you have any suggestions we are listening. it should be over soon though.

    So many of those poses and positions are the same things I see Paco do. I'm also no expert, and Paco's my first dog that's mine-all-mine for me to watch all the time, but I feel like Tag's face is very Basenji-like…and if he yodels as well... if he doesn't have Basenji in him, I'd at least say you could describe him to others as a Basenji-like dog.

    Is there anyone out in the New Jersey area (or knows of a site that I can be directed to) who knows of any vets that have knowledge of Basenjis? We have a 4 month old Basenji and our breeder took her to the vet at 8 wks but she hasnt been to one since so I've been looking for a good vet for a standard visit and cant seem to find one who knows about Basenjis (well all the vets Ive talked to, act like they know about them but you can tell they've never had one as a patient ;0 Thanks for the help!

    I saw that you have a sewing machine – its not hard to make your own coat. I made one for my previous beasties with fleece and wool. I made it with a high colar (for the backside of the neck) and an indentation for the tail and a big belly and chest band (I used snaps at first but then switched to velcro). It worked pretty good for our single digit temps (and the occasional below zero walks to the corner). My current beastie refuses to go out the door with a coat on, however. When the outside temps are below 10F she won't stay outside any longer than necessary to go potty - the squirrels can run around all they want then! With respect to booties, mine will at least tolerate them when we go for walks but it's more for the road salt. However, the good pair I bought this year leak somehow (maybe through the stitching?) and she doesn't like them with they get wet inside. Nevertheless be sure you get the best you can find.

    When I took my puppy to my vet, he said he had little knowledge of the Basenji, but he would start reading up on them. Since that time, he's thanked me for the opportunity, and says he is learning more all the time - at our last visit for final puppy shots he said he felt he was becoming quite an expert - if you come across a vet who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about them, he could quite easily love the challenge and become great on the Basenji issues. I told him I'd sent for the DNA marker kit and had Shaye tested (thank God, it was clear), and he launched into a really good discussion about the symptoms, illness, etc., and said he was glad I'd done that, but maybe in a while we would do some blood work to be sure of everything. I feel very confident with him now - so, a good vet with a love to be challenged can be an answer too.
