    I have a 13 year old tri basenji boy. As I write this he's passed out infront of the fireplace. The poor boy hates our winters, the fact that it's -42 with the wind is just not cool.
    I've had him since he was 8 weeks old, which means I've had him for over half my life. I showed him for about three years, then he wanted to quit. So he's a few points short of his championship. It was kinda hard to get more than 1 point when there were no other basenjis showing around here. I haven't been to a show since, so I don't know if thats changed.
    Anyways, Blaze lives with my boyfriend and I in a condo, and at least once a month we travel up to my boyfriend's family farm. Blaze gets to run free up there, and can tire their 3 year old border collie out. He loves it. It's the only car ride that he doesn't scream and whine the entire way.
    Lately we have become regulars at the vet. Apparently Blaze's liver degenerated, then his pancreas went on the fritz. So he's on some expensive enzyme powder and anti-acidic poop pills. He's doing pretty good and still acts like a puppy. I hope to have him for many more years.
    And I just wanted to say thanks for having this forum. I really enjoyed lurking, so I'm sure I'll enjoy participating.

    welcome…you'll laugh at some (everybody is so funny here) of the post and get great advice. I'm from Canada too, but moved to Florida 2 years ago, I doubt my B's would like me to take them back there lol...

    Welcome to the forum. As someone who's lived in Edmonton for a year, I agree with your Basenji, the winters up there are too long and too cold.:D

    Nice of you to join, post some pics of that Tri Boy when you can.

    Welcome…I hope you can sort out his health issues. There is lots of great information on this site. Looking forward to seeing pics when you can!
    PS My B isn't pleased with the subzero temps here either!!

    Welcome-every B is individual-I live near Niagara Falls, Canada-Shadow won't go outside unless he HAS to and Sugar a Damisi are quite eager to run in and out after the birds as many times as I let them.

    I own five basenjis. Two yodel until you have a headache and my female barks. She always did. Short clipped barks. I also researched the breed before getting my first and she is an excellent dog. My third basenji was a handful. Three years later and he has stopped his destructiveness etc. It was a hard three years. Lol. You never know with a basenji. Greatest breed. Loyal, active, funny but some require ALOT of patience.

    Kathy and the others who've had to treat Fanconi affected dogs - I'm sorry if you've been upset by my saying that Fanconi is treatable. I was in no way implying it's easy to treat and can't comment obviously on the traumas involved as I've never had to treat. I feel very sorry indeed for the dogs and their owners and have never thought that Fanconi itself as a disease is in any way insignificant. I do know that there are some on this forum in the UK who may have to face this too and I wouldn't want them to think either that I don't feel terribly for them. Figures are easy to quote but it is the ones applicable (in this case 7 out of every 100) who are really suffering. The other 93 are lucky. (Each man's death diminishes me') I have had the experience of having to force treatment down a very ill dog though (in this case dying of strychnine poisoning} and do know how painful it was for us, wondering if we were being cruel. In our case I think we were, as our beautiful bitch died any way. Every one makes their own decision. Believe me, I suffer for you all who have Fanconi affected dogs but above all, for your Basenjis!. Thank you for the information on other diseases Ivoss but I was mainly wondering about the UK. When our KC conducted a health questionnaire, the take up was very low - in my opinion too many breeders were afraid for themselves rather than bothered about the breed and it's future. I've heard of and seen more cases of IPSID (for example) in the UK than I have Fanconi. Scott, that's not quite true that we don't have tests for other diseases! If you read through many advisory posts on this forum you'll see there are tests for all sorts of conditions. It is also fairly easy to avoid those lines where their Basenjis age quickly, in my opinion. And yes, there are reasons for not testig obviously as otherwise we'd all be testing!! I have devoted my life to the Basenji and any progress towards its eventual near perfect health is of utter concern to me and so welcome the present ability to identify markers which may eventually eliminate Fanconi Syndrome.

    Welcome, from another Ohioan. We are on the north side of columbus and have 1 r/w boy. We have occasionaly taken him to the Westerville dog park but his behavior has not be great lately. We have cut back. We also help BRAT transport and foster. Great to have more B's in Ohio. I see so few of them in Columbus.

    Hi Kiro, Welcome our neck of the woods. I live just a bit past Emmittsburg in PA so I'm not too far. The Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club meets at the Carroll County Agricultural Center right there in Westminster. Our next meeting is 1 June and there will also be a spring fun match that same day. It starts at 0900. There is a Yahoo group for the club that has info about the event. It's fun and games. It's really neat to see so many basenjis in one place. Hope you can make it. It's a nice club to belong to. Karen
