Sally Jo is very sick please pray!

  • @JazzysMom:

Seems like the X-ray should have given them an idea whether it's a blockage or not?

Not always… ultrasound is better, but even on that a vet that is not a specialist can miss it....

  • The X-ray should a f"bloated belly" ,or "full belly. Thats why they thought it could be a blockage. So I brought her back this morning, and because she looked better, the vet felt I could take her home, and feed her the soft prescriptoin food, and see if anything moved. Well….IT DID! Yipeee... allthe batting fromher bedding she ate, is now out, with a little help from mom. She is much ahppier now. The last stool was loose and was the color of her food. Not to be gross, but it smelled like it to. So I think that's it. I hope. After the last massage, I could hear her bowls moving , so I took her on a small walk, and sure enough there it was! hehehehehe...I'm so happy, and sad that I could have spent a lot of money on something she was able to do at home. O-Well......I'm safe from a large vet bill for now. I'm so happy she's better.

  • I should say a lot MORE money $400 is still a lot but she's o.k.

Yes, $400 is a large amount of money for many of us..MANY can't afford $400 w/out planning and saving toward that.

You are lucky, indeed, that you were able to treat her at home.
    Glad she's feeling better.

  • So happy to hear she's doing better!!

  • I am so happy for you and your furbaby. I had a similiar problem with my B once, she ate parts of a sheet. She was in my son's bedroom and we found her nawing on a new set of sheets. Well, later that day she tried to pass a long piece of that sheet and it would not come out. My hubby was home with her, (not to be gross) but he had to pull it out. I took her to the vet when I came home, I was worried that some could be wrapped around her insides but Thank God my vet didn't feel she had a problem. I washed those sheets and was about to cut off the damaged part of the top sheet to repair, and do you know she started licking that sheet again, it must be something in that material that she likes. Of course I removed her from the bedroom and that saved my sheet. Basenjis, they are so weird!!!! We love our Basenjis to Pieces!!!!!!

  • Glad to hear she's okay!

  • So happy for you that everything came out okay ( :D ) and seriously that she's okay now.

Apparently not always. A while back I watched the Animal Planet show about Vet interns and a big goofus puppy was brought in sick. The owner thought he might have eaten glue. The dog finally threw up part of a tennis ball and so the Vet thought he was out of the woods. A few days later the dog was brought back in still sick and getting sicker. Xrays were done with barium and they looked fine and no foreign object or obstruction could be seen. The dog was getting sicker and the decision was finally made to do exploratory surgery. The dog HAD eaten the glue and it formed a big ball in his stomach. The glue ball had absorbed the barium and made the x-ray look as if it had filled with the barium and like nothing else was there. Strange!

  • Wow….Ouch. the vet did offer to do the Barum study the next day. But when they saw her eat a treat off the floor, and they realized I could pay for another $800.00 they changed thier minds. (it was going to be more) Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful that she is better, but I'm sad to know that I might not be able to afford to rescue Sally, if she really is sick. I do save money but I do have 3 kids, and , let me say this with gusto..A LOT of medical bills that just came up. I don't want to think about that right now, again I'm just very glad she survived, and I'm going to work on why she ate the bedding to begin with. I put a camera out today and see that she is anxious when I leave her for more than 2 hours. :( By the way she still has a litlle inher. Hello.... Can you say Laxative!?

  • By the way.. Thank you BDawg..I love her new collars Here is the white and green one. I got the black and white and red heart one too…. SHE loves them to. Her neck looks great! It's so easy to take off and on. Thanks Again! see profile pic's the one on the right.

  • You don't even want to ask what Kristii's surgery was for the "whatever" she had in her gut… I have it and still can't figure it out...

I am so glad that she passed everything on her own...

I hear ya;it is hard. I have six kids – one in college, one getting ready to head to college, two in braces w/one more waiting his turn, and two with Type I Diabetes.... it adds up to me hoping like crazy to keep my three dogs and two cats healthy! I can scrape up what I need generally, but anything catastrophic would be.. well, catastrophic!

  • Thanks, I appreciate your reply. Keep plugging away! I'm praying for your family!

Awww, thanks. :D I appreciate that. We do okay…you know, ya just keep plugging along! Life is GOOD!!

  • Just saw your post… ;) Glad the collars are working out! Poor little thing looks like she could use a few pounds! I hope she's continuing to improve!

  • BDawg- She is feeling much better, and doing well on the Nutro. She has been eating a good amount of food each meal. I think she is getting used to it. She was very thin when we got her. She does gain, but not much. Now that she is better, I hope she gains again.

I too am sorry for not seeing this thread sooner and hopefully the poster will return. My Basenji had some teeth removed and the vet prescribed Carprofen as the follow up antibiotic. My Basenji turned out to be allergic to Carprofen which caused her liver to fail. I went through the same scenario you are describing. She gradually quit eating over the course of several days and then her water consumption started to go down. The eating had me worried since she had an excellent appetite upon return from the vet and the final purging of the anesthesia from her system. Nevertheless, her condition started to degrade. I followed her outside and watched her urinate. Her urine was a very bright yellow. I suspected then a liver issue. Once back inside she was shivering - off to the vet we went. LIver panel blood work up showed very high on specific indicators for failing liver. Vet prescribed Denamarin (containing SAM-e and silybin). SAM-e helps protect liver cells from cell death and aids in cell repair and regeneration. The Vet also started fluid injections. Fluid injections were everyday for two weeks. My Basenji showed a remarkable response to the fluid injections becoming much more her normal self even after the first day. She hated the injections and I could hear her cry when receiving them at the vet (believe me that will tear you up). But she was doing better and she (me) were going to have to tuff this out. Also a different antibiotic was prescribed to prevent liver infection during recovery. The Denamarin comes in dosages based on weight (medium for us). It is the size of a large human like solid oblong vitamin pill. Instructions want you to give it on an empty stomach and preferably not to cut it or place in something similar to a pill pocket however you can if necessary. My Basenji would not take that size (can't blame her). Cutting and disguising it did not work either. I was frantic and got the SAM-e in powder form. I couldn't slip her that either. All though some folks had success with peanut butter and liverwurst. I finally after three days had to have the vet pill her along with her fluid treatments. A week later another blood sample and her liver panel indicators were coming down. The pilling would last for a month and it took two people to get the pill down her. The important part is - she fully recovered from the liver failure. She is 13 1/2 yrs old. My experience after having 5 Basenjis is that the breed is sensitive to medications (anesthesia also). Many of the medications work just fine in most other breeds and mixes. The vet, if not that experienced with the Basenji, must be cautioned. Mine was not. Before accepting any medication have the vet go over any contraindications with you and to double check their resources for potential side effects when dealing with Basenjis. They may switch to something else if a medication has a bad track history with Basenjis. Know what to watch for should your Basenji start to react in a non-positive manner. The poster did not indicate if there were medications in play when the dog started showing degenerating conditions. I sincerely hopes this helps in some way and helps other Basenji owners

Thank you all. I can now talk about him without breaking down. I still tear up. I can look at his pictures and his toys. There's still a void and it's still painful and I still cry, but not as much. We have his ashes on the windowsill, one of his favorite places.

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.
