  • Wow, any idea were the litter came from? Hard to believe a litter in the shelter??… And idea who the breeder was??? Also, please learn about health concerns in our breed, go to www.basenjihealth.org or www.basenji.org. It is important that you know the health problems and become familar with them….

  • I'm not 100% sure about where the litter came from. I remember someone at the shelter said something about a man that has dropped off a few litters of Basenjis before. I'm guessing he's a backyard breeder that has problems selling the puppies. I've already read a little about some of the health problems the breed is prone to. Since I know nothing about Charlie's parents I will be keeping a close eye on him for any problems. He already had a hard enough time coming home from the shelter with kennel cough and ringworm.

Thankfully my vet has several Basenji patients and is familiar with the breed.

  • Welcome and what a little cutie you have there. Quite a find from the shelter of a young basenji pup.

That is great… think about doing the DNA Fanconi testing....

  • What a little cutie!! You'll learn lots of good tips here at the forum. Welcome.

  • OMG! He's soooo cute! Welcome to the forum and how kind of you to give this little guy his forever home…
You'll find lots of great advice and loads of fun on this site!

  • I personally think you were suppose to see this wonderful breed, he needed a home and you were there. It just happened because it was suppose to happen that way. I had the same happen to me, once I held my B, Sahara at the pet store I couldn't resist. She licked my face and even though I left to go have dinner I returned right after and took her home. She was rather expensive, so believe me you got yourself a Diamond in the rough. Welcome, and it won't take you long to learn lots of great info at this site. The members are wonderful with their advice. You sure have a cutie there, and the old guy is cute as well.

  • I second everything that YoungandTired just said. This breed will put you under its spell – it can make you laugh and make you cry-- but we wouldnt give up our furbabies for anything. Welcome!

  • my thought is that we all who own b's have a great sense of humor!
They do make us laugh…and hit ourselves over the head with the rolled up newspaper...

  • I've had quite a few laughs from Charlie already. He's quite the klutz, matches his mommy.
My mom told me yesturday that she was in the bathroom putting on make-up and Charlie ran in. He looked at her then at a pen on the floor, then back at her. And while still staring at my mom he ran, grabbed the pen, turned, and ran back towards the doorways. Then slammed right into the wall.

  • Charlie is darling! Its hard to believe such beautiful dogs like basenjis can end up in a shelter.

  • Welcome!! And what cute pup :D

@CrazyBasenjiMom said in Hey there! Meet Tars!: He mostly basenji, but not full, he doesn't have the ears, t he tails a give away too, is it curly? 23 is kinda heavey for a Basenji full grown, I wish 23 was heavy for a full grown Basenji, but it really is not. In fact it's in the middle with many weighing much more. I have seen some pretty large poorly bred, but also some big ones who were largely African years ago in NC at the nationals. I have seen a lot of basenjis whose tails were not right also, so that doesn't eliminate being basenji. But obviously no way to know for sure. I'd go with mix also, especially if those ears aren't fully erect soon. In ears...they SHOULD be up... but that isn't always true even of registered basenjis: https://www.basenji.org/african/lubb0001.htm One major break from the early development trend is African puppy ears. Both domestic & 3/8 litters had upright ears in approximately a week, while the Africans took much longer. In fact, 2 puppies went to their new homes at 15 weeks of age and their ears were not consistently up although they did finally come up; Roos between 17 & 18 weeks and Roosters by 4 months. <<

If you'd like to adopt a rescue….I'd highly recommend Basenji Rescue and Transport (B.R.A.T.). There are 4 rescues waiting for adoption in Texas right now. We got our Prince through BRAT and we love him dearly!

I have raincoats on my b's…when its wet...but they have to go out, doesn't matter if they don't want to. We live in the PNW...so rain is part of the deal. They do learn quickly that if they are "quick" with their business...they can go indoors. Get a raincoat for her and take her out. Laugh!

Hi New from CT, I tried to send you a message several weeks ago, I'm a neighbor, a few towns away. Stellabella is my Basenji girl. My part time sometime job during the summer is as an operator of a tour boat at Mystic Seaport. Stellabella assists me. I invite you to read the story of Stellabella on the introductions page. Perhaps I made an error in my screen name, it is Stellasperson. Hope to hear from you.

@Lenora: Hello to the new basenji owner from Birmingham! I live in Highland Park, so you are not alone. I got Abbey two years ago from some people in Morris who have the parents. She is actually not the first basenji I've had. We got Pumpkin in 1970 from the humane society here in Birmingham for $3 dollars!! Pumpkin was the color of a pumpkin. I didn't know basenjis came in black and white til I saw Abbey. The original owners had four puppies and for some reason she didn't sell till she was four months old. Basenjis here are rare, and that's part of the joy of owning one. People stop me all the time in the street and say, that's the most beautiful basenji I have ever seen! And people who don't know what she is make all kinds of guesses–a jack russell terrier is the most frequent guess. One man yesterday said is that a short haired collie (I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing). And everybody who doesn't know about basenjis is fascinated to hear about them. yes when jig and i are out and about or even at the vet, we are always stopped because people are like what kind of dog is that. he is so pretty. of course jig is quite the flirt and loves the attention and putting on a show. glad to know im not the only one around these parts! im down 280, passes brook highlands, greystone i guess you would call it!
