• We were at our local dog park, when a woman approached and asked "is that a Basenji?" Yes it is we answered. "I knew it!" she said. "I am a philly cop and I remember getting a call about a woman screaming in an apartment." "When my partner and I arrived, we broke the door down as we could hear the lady yelling and moaning." "We got inside only to find a basenji in a crate." Apparently some one wasnt happy!!!

  • hahahaha. The first time I left Max alone years ago in my house when I took his companion to the vet, my neighbor thought I had a crying baby in the house.

  • Yes.. that happens… which is why it is important to tell potential people interested in Basenjis that while they don't bark... they are by no means mute and they make all other dog noises plus some....
A friend of mine, when her girls were in season, had her male locked in one room... when she got home from work the police were there wanted to know why she had a child locked alone in the house.... when she tried to explain it was her Basenji boy... crying for the girls in season, well you can image... they didn't believe her... after the searched the house... they were still not convienced that it was the boy dog... so she put him back in the room... locked away the girls out of sight and then said to the police, lets take a walk... they got to the end of the driveway and off he went crying for the girls... gggg... they did believe her after that.

  • I remember once several of us were at a show - it was Saturday and we were on in the AM - we all went to Perkins. Our dog were in the grooming area all near each other and quiet.

When we got back and started to walk our dogs - we got some strange looks from people and some angry huffs. Turns out while we were gone the furkids decided a concert was in order. It's nice when we can provide comic relief.

  • In 1980 when I first moved into government quarters on the Presidio of Monterery, CA I had my basenji in a crate because the movers had just left. I went to take a shower, when I got out of the shower I heard pounding on the door. I opened the door to find an MP who said that they had received a call saying that a woman was being beaten in my apartment. I looked around the corner and there was another MP with his gun drawn. I invited them both in and escorted them to the back bedroom where my dog greeted them with a yodel. I let her out and apologized. They didn't give me any trouble but they did search the entire place.

😃 Can appreciate that story too!!!!!

  • Back in the 80's my husband and I were strolling in our neighborhood and stopped (right in front of our house) to talk wtih a woman pushing a stroller. She pointed to our house and said that something bad goes on there, she had heard a woman's scream several times. We started laughing and offered to introduce her to that "screamer", went in and got our two basenjis. They were bad about howling or screaming if the phone rang when we were gone. I was actually glad for the chance to dispell the neighborhood rumor that torture was taking place in our house!

  • 😃 These stories are so funny My 24 yr. old son moved 5 hrs. away and needed some help decorating his first apartment. Of course Dad and I told him we had a few things he could use and we would love to visit the weekend. My son said, "Mom bring Sahara, don't board her". My son is part owner of her, and I told him I would love to do that but if I crate her while we are gone to dinner (we were going to dinner with his new girlfriend) she would scream and make awful noises and his neighbors would probably think it is a woman in distress. Besides he had just moved and you have to pay to have a pet, and even for visitors, like $250. He fussed and said it will be alright, I want to see her, but I did convince him that we didn't need to bring her. Now I know we made the right decision. I bought my B from a petshop and she cost me $1, 500 and he talked me into buying her by giving me $500 on her. My husband almost busted a gut when I told him the right price (I did hold the total price from him til I got her home) now he wouldn't take 5, 000 for her, he dearly loves this dog. They are buds and she loves him also, it was a great choice screams and all. haha:D 😃 😃 😃 😃
