Introducing a doberman puppy to senior basenji

    Hi, as some of you know Kiya crossed the rainbow bridge a few months ago, succeeded by Chance, who is still relatively healthy and is now 16. Chance is very chill, friendly with everyone including other dogs in the neighborhood, and sleeps most of the time nowadays except for 3 daily walks.

    We are thinking about bringing home a doberman puppy into our house in a few months. I am curious about your experiences with bringing a puppy in with a senior male basenji in the house.

    @Alex - Hi Alex, knowing Chances temperament I think it will be fine.... you really just want to not let the pup play too hard.... and to not really bother him too much when he wants/needs to sleep. I don't believe you will have many issues other then the normal bring in a new puppy into the home... And WOW, hard to believe that Chance is16!

    @tanza thanks, that's what we figured, just making sure he is comfortable and not bothered too much. Do you have any thoughts on bringing in female vs male puppy? From what we heard temperament does not really matter until 1-2 years, and just need to make sure they eat separately to avoid food aggression.

    @Alex Always suggest that it is a male/female pair... of course it would depend on each disposition... but rule of thumb is male/female...so I would think that you might be better with one of each sex, that said, your breeder for the dobie can help you with that especially since Chance is older (way older... LOL) now and yes, always suggest separate feeding... I have always used crates to feed them in... But disagree that temperament doesn't matter in the beginning, but it can... so make sure that your pup has a good temperament and from a responsible breeder.

    Always say, opposites are best... are these littermates? Even with opposites, many times littermates are a problem... as they competed as babies for everything.... and we say, it works till it doesn't... Is there a reason you want two of the same sex? and you need to be prepared that if they don't get along you will need to separate... I was very lucky but very concerned about the two bitches I got at the same time, 2wks in age apart... I looked at the temperament of both before deciding... and LUCKED out... I have one very confident bitch and one not.. but they have meshed well together with the confident bitch not concerned with being "top" in the house, she knows she is but doesn't need to prove it.... still it took till my one bitch had puppies to prove to me that she was OK in her skin and have remained friends since... even with her puppies. IMO (in my opinion) unless you are looking to breed at some point, not worth the chance... been the other route too... and it is NOT fun

    Not allowed on the couch was the first rule we made and the first we broke, I only made it to please the hubby, but know I wanted snuggles and cuddles so not sad it went out the window. I just wasn't willing to spend sooo much time correcting Kaiser over the rule that I knew he was going to win and seemed to be wrong as he is all about human contact and just glad he loves to sleep in his crate and the bed rule never got broken. Knowing how Kaiser yearns to have human contact and how he likes to be up high I don't think I would have made it a rule in the first place, but if you stick to it and give your puppy a comfy, warm, high, sunny spot and lot's of cuddles it may learn in time to love the spot you have chosen for it, but will say good luck with that.     If he has stones, he may not be marking but may not be able to make it outside in time. I had an elderly girl who could not make it outside in time and as soon as I heard her wake up, I picked her up and took her outside. I had a young female who had urinary crystals and before she was treated as soon as she got to the door she went and she was having to go every couple hours. Jennifer

    Hi sackman and welcome to the forum. I highly recommend both Tanza Basenjis and Kinetic Basenjis. You won't go wrong with either one of them. :)

    From what I understand…after reading a bit. Take the dogs for a long walk together...I mean REEEEAAALLY long. Have them get to know their territory & tire them out. Once tired & they've made the association that they are now part of your pack the meeting will go smoother (hopefully). Allow them to meet & greet but keep an eye out for signals...threatening behavior like lots of lip licking, growls, teeth, etc. if need be just get in between them & stay calm. They will now how to calm each other & they will know how to communicate with each other. GOOD LUCK & CONGRATS!!! :D
