Scooting and licking tail

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • @zande So, on the panty hose, would I stuff a leg with something soft and gently tie it around her neck, like a doughnut? I tried a thick, fluffy scarf yesterday but it didn’t stay on long. So, see, I WAS looking for alternatives. I want her as comfortable as possible!

  • Stuffing something soft into it might well do the trick. Using the whole leg and foot, you could locate the stuffing in place inside the stocking by tying a knot each side of it and then using as much of the leg as you need to fix it in place around her. I was thinking more about protecting the area she is attending to. But try anything - poor wee girl !

I am glad to hear of her improvement. Sometimes we live with dogs and don't see the changes they start so slow. It's good to make it a habit to actually inspect them monthly. I hope she keeps improving but as Sally said, too much weight gain isn't good.

Well, his tail returned to normal just 2 days after. He has his 1 year check up this week so the doc will check it for any problems. Thanks for all your input and advise.

@sharronhurlbut: I would take the dog to the vet and have the dog checked and glands expressed. BUT in the meantime… I would start adding a large tablespoon of pumpkin canned not pie makings into the food at every meal, this will keep the glands from becoming an issue in the future. at least that has worked for my dogs. What I meant by being "proactive" was to take the dog to the vet (like Sharron recommended)–but also just to keep an eye out for any problems (like you've been doing) and take action. I happened to have a B who needed to be manually expressed every couple of weeks for about the last 6 yrs of his life--his glands were situated abnormally--and I didn't want to put him through surgery. But I have heard that adding pumpkin to the food can really help.
