Tail injury

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi all, two year old Sydney was involved in a scrap at daycare, and came out with a tail injury. Tail has been down and she certainly is not herself. We've been to the vet, shaved tail, some obvious trauma, prescribed rimadyl and cefpodoxime, and neosporin on the tail. We've given her the antibiotic, but stopped the pain med. She's eating, drinking, peeing and pooping relatively normal. Biggest concern is that she won't sit or lay down. She almost falls asleep standing, then wakes up just as she loses balance. So sad to watch. Worried that she isn't sleeping. She also won't leave her tail alone. Any ideas? We will likely go back to the vet Monday…poor pup.

Stuffing something soft into it might well do the trick. Using the whole leg and foot, you could locate the stuffing in place inside the stocking by tying a knot each side of it and then using as much of the leg as you need to fix it in place around her. I was thinking more about protecting the area she is attending to. But try anything - poor wee girl !

I have run into that myself and walked way around. I would just check the Bs foot and if it's cut I would carry it home and treat accordingly. See if there's a piece of glass in there and if I can get it out. If it's a real bad cut it may be off to the emergency clinic.

Well, his tail returned to normal just 2 days after. He has his 1 year check up this week so the doc will check it for any problems. Thanks for all your input and advise.

Cody has never wagged his tail. EVER. Having only had happy tail waggers previously (a Golden retriever mix for example - they are exemplary tail waggers), I initially found this very disconcerting, but I have learned to read his other signals to know when he is happy. It's weird to me, but his tails never moves with his emotions. Sometimes it relaxes and straightens when he is relaxed, but that's it. So, I just watch the rest of his body language to gauge how he's feeling. From what I see on this forum, it's not that uncommon. But - I am insanely jealous of those folks whose Basenjis wag!!!! LOL!
