New Besenji Owner - His name is Rusty!

Member Introductions
  • Hi everyone,

I just joined this site and its great to have a community for the dogs! :)

We just rescued our little guy Rusty about 2 months ago and he is so lovable yet he has never been trained and we are the 3rd owners and so the next year will be an adjustment period with lots of training!

He is so smart and picks up training very well but when he gets bored quickly and is a chewer or causes a ruckus!

    From Ontario Canada :)

  • How old is Rusty? Can you put up some pictures? Yes, Basenjis are very smart, and it's a little worrisome that you are the third owner. What happened with the first two? No question Basenjis can be destructive when left to their own devices, but hopefully you will be able to get a handle on his behaviour. BTW, I'm in Ontario as well.

  • Welcome! Where did you get him from? I also am curious what happened in the first 2 homes.

We love pictures, hint hint. :)

  • Oh so nice to know that there are others in Ontario with Besenjis they are not very common around here. Our breeder has a policy that if it doesn't work out with her dogs they must be returned to her to make sure they are in good hands. The first return was due to a divorce and then the women took him by herself but returned him again after a few months and now he is at his forever home with us. We got him from Hammond Ontario through a Breeder.

Will try to find a way to post a picture of him :)

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait

Adorable face - probably a devil in hiding :p If the biting is clearly play biting a firm NO should work (and see previous comments). If more serious then try bitter apple spray. You definitely want to stop this type before it gets out of hand. Mine (3 yrs old) occasionally will bite (gently and really just a mouthing) when trying to get my attention to play. But you can tell from her expression that she knows she did something unacceptable. Consistent training is the most important thing you could do.

Hi, yes ive seen your website, i was inquiring about a basenji female from tazy through Jenni Palmer, but not sure how the lines would work with my boy. My boy is out of Sire Eurabbie Mercedes and Dam Eurabbie Hermione. There have been a few late litters this year if there is nothing to tie in with my boy this year, ill wait till next year.

@BasenjiDiva: Sorry if this sounds dumb but when you talk about tattooing your dogs, are you talking about actual tattoos or do you just keep marking them yourselves. And…if they are actually tattooed, who does it? The vet? Pat They are real tattoos and usually done by a tattoo artist…. there are some dog people that have gotten really good at it and will have clinics at shows. The one we had here in No. California retired... she was really good, made them nice and small... some vets to it, but not many anymore and some I have seen are horrible... Mine are on the skin just above the hind leg.. and it would take maybe 10mins tops.... 90% of the dogs didn't mind either and the worst part was putting them on their backs... not the tattoo itself
