I understand that the going out in the rain thing is pretty universal. The fuss she makes has stopped being funny😠 She will go right back inside and do it all right on her spot in the living room...😈

Welcome to the community. I used to walk Chance and Kiya in the rain until they got the point that they have to go outside rain or shine. Only once in a while it becomes a long walk when it's raining, most of the time they go or hold it and ask to go outside. It took years of practice and being persistent.

You need to take her out (bring your umbrella) and walk her until she goes. Alternately if you have a fenced backyard you can try locking her out until she complies, but it may be a long wait and you will have to observe her the whole time. To be clear, are we talking about urination or defecation? I ask because there are ways to encourage defecation, e.g. "match" her. Most Basenjis will "get the picture" if there are no alternatives. However, if you give in and bring them back inside, it only encourages their behaviour. When I encountered difficulties with elimination in the backyard, coming back inside was not on the table. I would grab a raincoat or umbrella and take the dog for a walk.

Oh dear spirits do I understand. I had one Rottie I had to DRAG off the porch into the rain. Once she was wet, she'd go. It was like "If I have to get wet, so do you." I thought she was bad.
Then came basenji rescue Cara who made my life a living hell, because rain is what happens in GA. She wouldn't eat so she didn't have to go, so I had to put her on pills to get her to eat, and/or force feed. She would still hold it in-- and then she had her first anal gland explosion. It took over a month of soaking the opening with warm compresses. Not even 4 mos later, it happened again. At that point, I'd had it. I added fiber to her food and simply locked her out til she went. Usually on the porch.. but I didn't care. This went on for about 2 yrs.
Oh I forgot to mention, she's also crazy. Don't get me wrong, we love every molecule of her. She is so loving and wonderful. But insane dog aggressive, bug-eyed panic over sudden noises, sudden movement. So we put her on Prozac. Prozac.... I'd kiss the feet of the inventor (I just looked it up... not joking, going to send him a thank you note! .. Klaus Schmiegel

Residence Indianapolis, IN<<Not only did it drastically reduce her dog aggression and bug eyed panic, but she no longer stressed over rain. She goes out FAST, does her business in the yard, comes in. I'm not suggesting prozac if the only issue is rain!!! But I did want to let you know you aren't alone.
The only other option that I could give is if your house is big enough for an indoor potty thing... Or if you can provide a covered area and raised place for your dog to go in without getting wet. Before prozac, I was considering having our handyman build it, with a platform base with astro turf or something-- that's how desperate I was.

You will have to force her to go outside in the rain. The other posts are right, basenjis want you to get wet too! I am on basenji number 3 and they are all the same. It may take a while but they will eventually do their business.

@margiem ...hi!! The problem is even if she does go outside (or not) she will still go into her corner of the living room and do her business...#1 and #2.....and nothing intimidates her...as we all know.
Rugs all removed. Hardwoods done....but grrrrr. She is 6 and hitting an incredible stubborn streak...lol.
She and my 12 year old beagle are an item. Love her to peices but getting her NOT to do her business in the house seems impossible☺☺☺

That is a new piece of information. Six years old? I assume she hasn't had this problem all along, so can you pinpoint what might be different now? Maybe do a thorough checkup to make sure it isn't some sort of physical problem. I am assuming that if she had voided she wouldn't still insist on soiling in the house?
For the #2 problem, you could try using a match. Just insert one (I use the paper ones) into the rectum before you let her out. With luck the irritation will persuade her to go. At the very least, you will know if she comes back matchless she has gotten it done! #1 is generally an easier thing to get, particularly if you walk her.

Instead of letting this make me crazy...lol....i have to chalk it up to laziness or spite....and keeping lots of washable throw rugs on hand!
I started using training treats this morning when she did her business outside...we shall see💜💛💚

I have stood out in the rain with Cara for over an hour, her screaming, crying, holding up one foot after another... over and over. And no, she ever, ever pottied. Which is why I found the concrete back porch acceptable.
