Dew claw pads

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi guys-

Just wanted to know if anyone has seen this before. Piggy pads near her dew claws are looking awfully white and cracked, but the cracked pieces are almost coming out in sprout-like formations. I just noticed it and am going to make a vet appt, but has anyone seen this?? They are not bothering her at all she hasn't even been licking or biting them and seems healthy otherwise. Think its a fungus?

    -Thanks!

Glad it was nothing serious…annoying for Kipawa, but not serious!

Thanks everyone for your help concerning Seren's torn dew claw. We've just returned from the vet. It wasn't her toe just the nail. Her nail was trimed (pretty deep) and bandaged. She looks so pathetic holding her foot up with the bandage. Hopefully the bandage will stay on at least until tomorrow. A little bit of 'bitter apple' may help. The vet assures me she will be fine. The Basenji Forums folks are the best!

I use a little heavier emollient than vaseline (Aquaphor) and massage it in. It doesn't seem to rub off as easy as vaseline. The whole family uses it as well. Chapped hands, lips, etc..It works great, and faster IMO.

I use tea tree oil on everything. Its the "anti Basenji" tool in our house. Alex will tease me all the time. I apply it to anything I don't want the dogs to lick off. Paws, an insect bite I don't want them to lick, a rash, etc. Its also a great antiseptic and helps the healing process too. I just love it!!!!

You an also try putting some ointment on their paws to help heal & avoid any further scrapes. I use Mushers Secret..it's good all year around.
