Just a GROWING boy.

Basenji Talk
  • I mentioned recently that our newest B, Mr Baroo's Buddy, weighed in at just over 19 pounds at his initial vet visit. He had to go in for his 6 month check up and boosters last week and although he does look bigger he is not by any means over weight. You can still see his ribcage and has a beautiful lean look, however his weigh in this time showed him at 26.8 pounds. His new nickname is Horseasaurus.

  • My boy's like that - beautiful and slim, but try and pick him up? I like Horseasaurus - I call Butu my Concrete Dog….

  • I call Tucker a Tank. I had him weighed at the National and he was around 27lbs. He is solid muscle. Horseasaurus is an awesome nickname!

  • So true, I was aware that he was looking bigger but it really didn't register just how much until the vet tech announced that he had gained over 7 pounds since his last weigh-in.

  • Yep feel the back go if I go to grab Kaiser, have to remember to lift knees bent and back straight, already once lifting him into the bath after the dog park and lifted wrong and back went and out of action for a while. He's lost some weight while we have been working on his allergy flare up, but can't see him looking good losing anymore, he's just a big boy but would be nice to pick him up and cuddle more often. He does this weird situp/lean back position in my arms when I pick him up, does anyone else's basenji do that?

  • Buddy isn't a lap lover, he does like to lean against my leg and rest his head on my lap. Mr Baroo does like to lay across your lap with his head on your elbow, and Bitty loves to stand on your lap with her front legs around your neck and snort in your ear.

  • oh too much! but never enough of that Basenji type of love!!!

Hi mickeydoo, and welcome to the Forum. As for your boy, he's a good looking boy and IMO is at least part B, but who am I to say. If he is a puller the best thing would be to have him take an obediance course. Some years back I was the proud poppa of a GSD-Malamute mix who had his own idea of taking a walk, after putting him through an intensive obediance school he was awesome, we could walk through a crowd and he would stay at heel totally. In the meantime you might check into a no pull harness, there are many on the market and most are effective.

@PhocoenaGirl: Jazzysmom, your Keoki looks exactly like my guy. I think Beegin (and Keoki too) look thicker and broader than some of the other b's I've seen on this site. I don't know what that is called in breeder terms. Is there some kind of scale that you measure for that??? Not that your b's don't look super cute though regardless of height. I love the pic where Keoki is getting measured and Jazz is trying to squeeze in behind and get attention too:D That is just body type (thicker and/or broader)… there is no measurement for that... some B's are just heavier boned then others... that is why it is difficult to just go by lbs for weight.... For looking at a dog for proper weight, you should be able to see a "waist" which is from the end of the ribcage to the beginning of the hip... You should be able to easier feel your dogs ribs and when running you should be able to see a slight the rib outline... Note on this picture of Crystal you can see the "waist" and a nice tuck up [image: crystal_hayward.jpg]

I think it was Mirtillo that there was a video of playing with coke bottles…Jack got one down off the counter the other day and I started to let him keep it.....but then I thought better. I don't want him to think that if he gets something off of the counter I will let him keep it. Plus, there are lots of bottles I would rather he not get into (Finlandia, Jack Daniels, Jameson's). I think I will start letting him play with those (empty plastic bottles). They are the cheapest toy ever! Duke- I'm really embarrassed that I got you and Phoenix mixed up- really sorry....things are going well, though, hanks for asking. Jack hasn't been able to come down lately because we have been sanding and painting, and we didn't want for him to a) breathe in nasty fumes and sawdust and things that are bad or b) get a lovely little noseprint in the middle of a freshly painted wall! LOL! Moving day is May 24th. Jack is going to stay at a friend's house, to avoid the trauma of him having to see us move all of his things out of the apartment.

Never in a million years did I ever want to get another dog like Duke when he was younger. He was so wild and just a nut case. Then I discovered his Basenji-ism and learned all I could and trained him better. Even the sofa digging to China bothered me, but not for too long (my fault - not enough toys to keep him busy). Now there is Daisy - "Ooops! I did it again." Best thing I did for Duke. Daisy is so occupied with Duke, all the troubles like I had with Duke, don't exist. They play, play, play. I think they are both trying to be top dog. We'll see if either of them ever get to be it. No regrets and am glad we have another. Interesting thing about Daisy - She does not bark. She has a very-very high pitch (hard to describe) like hoot. Only heard it a few times. But she's not a barker. (Duke barks!) She's mostly quiet - when we first got her and put her in crate at night, she had some jungle sounding cries.

@ChaseandZahrasmom: Let's all just be thankful that B's are small dogs and not 110 Lbs beast! At least we can pick them up and tuck them under an arm and walk away with them while training! LOL! I have to do the same thing with Zahra sometimes. Amen! I was just thinking this earlier today while trying to control my pup…
