Penny, the Basenji Houdini

Basenji Talk
  • We came home to find that Penny (our Basenji) not only figured out how to open her crate, but also disassemble it! We can't even figure out how she did it, there are teeth marks on parts of the crate she shouldn't have even been able to reach. How does that even happen?!

It's a Kong Crate, she would have had to figure out how to push latches, while pulling on other latches, while simultaneously pushing and pulling on the sides of the crate itself. We, her humans have enough trouble disassembling it ourselves when it's time to move it. …and it was definitely set up correctly, it hasn't been disassembled for months.

We came home expecting to find her asleep in her crate, and she's asleep on the bed, with the whole side of the crate wide open.

My wife and I joke that we're in an Arms Race with her, trying to outsmart her, but tonight we lost the battle.

SHHHHHHH don't let my Kaiser know he should know how to get out of his crate. I suppose once they have escaped they will always have a go at doing it again. What a good solution to solve the problem getting another B, maybe Kaiser should escape. As Kaiser gets older I intend to test him being left out of his crate and hope he behaves as I always worry that if there's a fire he will be trapped. Jolanda and Kaiser

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
