Spaying while in heat

    My 7 month old girl has just come into her 1st season. She lives with 2 neutered male dogs(not Basenjis) and so far they're leaving her alone. I've booked her in for spaying in 3 days time. What do others think? Should I let her finish this heat cycle and get her done later?

    The advice we have been given and that we followed is this: spaying exactly between two heats, because at that point she is in a balanced hormonal state. To spay her now would put her system off balance. I would strongly recommend you cancel the meeting and wait at least 4 months or so.

    Most Vets will not recommend spay during season and unless there is a medical reason for doing it now, will recommend waiting till she is at least 3 to 4 weeks past the end of her season. I would also agree you should put it off and wait. Keep in mind however the neutered males can achieve a tie with a bitch in season, however considered "safe sex"… but since you have two males, this could present a problem, so something to keep an eye on

    I REALLY wanted the plaque vaccine to pan out. When it came out, my vets (who are cautious) said to wait a couple of years. Well, it has been found safe, but they discontinued it as it doesn't work. I really need a miracle. Though the truth is, she is good about it now and heck, I spent more time grooming the chow 2x a week than I do brushing her teeth every night. I still have to get them cleaned every 3 mos though. My vet recommended trying a water pik. ROFLMAO, me and what army? Sigh. So we just keep getting them cleaned.     One of my brother's friend Wilson also faced the same situation in which you mentioned that A friend at work lost her dog last year during the procedure so I'm somewhat nervous. But I faced this I got result normal. I was doing my work. I was upset at the time because I had my work burden headache. But decided to go near the Vet for my animal treatment I appreciate the work of the Vet.

    Both of mine came in again this year, but in my experience, if they are around another bitch basenji that is in season, it may bring the others in also. Mine showed no inclination to going into season, and yet, first one and then the other! They did go to a show where there was another bitch in season before this.

    @basenji_fan: I've never heard about breeders recommending waiting till they are over a yr old, that is something completely new :confused: :confused: there are other threads about this topic. A lot of breeders suggest waiting until about a year old, so that physically the dog is mature before the removal of the sex hormones. I would say *most breeders suggest between six months to a year is great. A lot of people would prefer that their bitch not go through a first heat cycle, and that their male not start lifting his leg…which can happen around six months old.

    She is still bleeding. I rescheduled for two weeks from Thursday. Her mom bled for almost a month and a half before letting the dad mount her. This sucks.
