Looking for a Basenji- New York

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • I have been looking, emailing, applying for rescue dogs, and anything else I can think of. I have fallen in love with Basenjis and there is no getting over it.

I would love a female who is tolerant of cats. I don't necessarily want a puppy, but am open to anything.

I can travel to get a dog, or have it flown if that works.

  • You might try contacting Jean Martin (Hounds of Timar) - she lives in upstate New York (Tully). I Have a basenji from her (Ozzy). Can't say enough good things about her as a breeder (and Ozzy's temperament) and she has some really nice dogs. She has done quite a bit of breeding with African Stock - my boy Oz is 1/3 Af. There are others on this forum that also have pups from her. She may have some adults/young adults (and I don't know if she is breeding a litter this year) available - don't know for sure. Her info is on the Basenji Club of America (BCOA) website (basenji.org). Good luck in your search.

  • Thanks! I had emailed her a while back and then sort of dropped the ball. I am going to see her and her dogs in the next week or so. She said she had one or two adults that could be adopted but not to someone that has never has a Basenji before. But I am happy that I will get to spend some time with the dogs. Thanks again!

  • Great that you are going to visit and seeing her basenjis first hand. That's one thing I admire about Jean - she is going to do what is best for her dogs and it is great that she is so straight forward - she wants it to work out for the dog and the person adopting. She may know of other breeders that have adults available - ask her when you visit with her - if you still think that basenjis are right for you. They aren't for everyone - my friends constantly ask me - you like these dogs why? hahaha

And just so you know and so you won't think it is uncommon, I have 3 that I would say would need a basenji experienced person, my 4th (which is Jean's boy, Ozzy), would probably be the perfect dog for anyone - he's almost an impostor because he is such an easy basenji - but I deserve him after my other three. ;)

@rjbasenji - this is the time to align with a responsible breeder for a pup maybe in 2021. Because Basenjis only come in season once a year and their litter size is only 4-6 puppies, it is difficult to find one especially will all the people that "want" one... If you can visit with a breeder that would help you or if not call them on the phone and tell them why you think that a Basenji would be a good fit for your family/lifestyle.

@yahtzee92 Just make sure you see Mom with the pups if at all possible and you definitely see the health certificates of both parents. OFA website is public domain - anyone can research on it. Tanza is right. Any puppy farmer can pay the BCOA and get listed. It doesn't mean there is any BCOA recommendation or guarantee.

@helle-devi Thank you for responding. I have already been in touch with the basenji sisters. I was not aware before I contacted them that they are located in CA. I think the distance between us is too great. If things didn’t work out between my basenji and one of their girls, the distance would be a problem. I did become a member on the Facebook site that you recommended. Thank you so much! I was unaware that such a site existed. Jo Ann

Hi, I talked to my daughter last night and she really does not want me to find him another home, even though he's making her sick, (she's allergic to him). She threatened to leave home if I did. She's 18 so she could. I guess we will try and keep him. The good news is I did find a place that will pick up and drop off dogs, take them for long walks in the woods, and let them play with other dogs for the day. All for just $17.00 a day. So at least he's not in a crate for 9 hours any more and he seems to really enjoy it. He runs to the person right away and is excited to go and comes back very happy and tired.

Big long "sighhhh". :( These dogs need to get into the BRAT system. Is anyone available to go and personally speak to who has the dogs now?

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
