Magical creatures

Basenji Talk

  • This is a really silly post. But with the release of The Hobbit movie in the next couple of weeks I reread the book this weekend.

My wife and I have decided that although Basenjis came to us from Africa that they originally hail from Middle Earth. They seem eminently Tolkien-like creatures. In Middle Earth they use their ears to fly long distances and in dark and dangerous forests they sleep hanging from their curled tails. Although they have also been know to fly into Eagles nests and sneak in and bed down with Eaglets. Because as we know, a Basenji can get along with any creature, even a dragon if necessary. In Middle Earth they speak their ancient language of ur-Basenji, although they are famous for being able to keep secrets.

You got that part right!! ;)

  • well, i could certainly see basenjis making an allience with dragons. But I always think of them as the velociraptors from Jurassic Park (very clever and always checking the electic fence!)

That's funny, because sometimes when I see our female doing something "sly" or naught or smart, I will say "clever girl" like the big game hunter guy from Jurassic Park. I think there is something raptor like (at least Jurassic Park raptor) in them too!

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

I read August Magic and was crying on page 2. But it is a great story. Anyone with a basenji (or any dog) will love it. You can also buy the cutest basenji plush toy from the website. Great gift. http://www.basenjimagic.com/plush.htm
