Red rimmed eyes

    My B has very red eyes at certain times of day and when he is very warm. It has started to happen more often and makes him look very tired. Is this an issue? How worried should I be?

    If concerned you should take him to the Vet to be checked. I would not think that it is normal, could be allergies, but only your Vet can tell you for sure

    Is it the actual 'white' of the eyeball or the lids? I agree with tanza and get a Vet to look at it. You don't want anything to allow the sight to get affected, especially if you can catch it early if it is indeed something serious.

    Thanks guys. Sometimes it's his eyes but normally it's his rims. He's all black so it shows up very dramatically. No pictures have turned out well enough to show it. We've switched him to Blue Buffalo brand food but he still scratches a lot around his face. Not as much as he used to but he still scratches. I'll get him tested as soon as I can get him in.

    Could it be something with his third eyelid? My Arnie's dad, Davie, had this and when he had a CERF exam at a BCOA National in St. Louis, it was noted. The vet said that he rarely sees this in Bs. In some breeds this is a problem-can be disqualified in the show ring if it is extremely noticeable. Davie's eyes just looked different and it was because it was non-pigmented. He did not need anything done to correct it. It was not a protrusion or a cherry eye or anything like that. A problem with a third eyelid can sometimes cause dry eye.

    I would take him to an opthalmologist for an exam though because there are lots of thing that it could be besides this. He could also be having really bad allergies that is causing inflamation of his eyes.

    Thank you for your help. I took her to the vet. They prescribed eye drops to see if it would help. They stained her eye. No scatches. They eye is slightly recessed. I will try the massage as you suggest. I really don't want her to have surgery. But I don't want her to be in pain either. Hoping the massage helps. Thank you.

    Pat, yeah, it was many but the specialist from GA (who does CERF btw, or did, could be retired at this point) said all were iris to iris and none should cause her issues. But you can still see them. I am comforted to know that a lot of strands don't pass as I honestly don't remember seeing that limitation, only on placement. Been a long time since I looked at CERF. But the issue was and then, the person LIED. She sent me a puppy for my child, who already had more on her than any child should with my health issues, that she obviously had no clue about– a puppy she had no clue about it's eye health. And then wanted her back if I wasn't going to breed her as she would. Yeah, over my dead body.

    Of course required for artificial… reread and don't know where you got I didn't know that. I said: As for proving, if you are not using semen, you don't have to test generally. Pretty clear I know if you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to test. But you ALSO have to test when producing lots of litters. I saw no reason to get into the specifics there. But let me state it clearly so you don't argue more on item that has nothing to do with the issue.. If you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to do DNA. If you do live cover, generally you do NOT have to do DNA unless you 1. use more than one stud 2. the stud produces a certain number of litters (not looking up number) and a few other situations. And Pat, chill, really. I didn't say looks was the ONLY. My point, which I stated repeatedly, is that the African dogs also don't KNOW for sure if pure basenji.

    If she's loosing hair then it sounds like it might be something more than just stress-of-an-intruder. The stray could have brought something nasty along. Maybe there's mites or something. I would take both to the vet.
