Protein in Urine

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Aloha,

When I left Hawaii in Nov 2011 I had Jaberi, 4 yr Basenji Health check at the time the vet discoverd protein in his urine 1.019. Vet advised changed food to Science Diet for Kidney diet. Jaberi has sensitivity to grains so gave him Blue dry for Senior protein is 12 %. whatch what kind of treats I give him. Just took him to vet yesterday had urine tested and now its 3.0. Vet said it could be the radically weather change, flying but that was like 5 months ago. My question is has anyone had an expreience with anything like this? Any suggestions? I am having a full blood work up done next week. He has been checked for Falconi negative so were both his parents.

    Mahalo for any help,

    Suzanne

  • Yes, I would thing that a full blood panel needs to be done. Here is a link you might want to look at http://www.fetchdog.com/learn-connect/dog-resource-library/health/diagnostic-tests/Protein-in-Dogs-Urine/D/300600/P/1:5:55:601:6103/I/AR000010044

  • Thank you, since we are new here in Northern San Jose do you have any vets or know of any vets that specialize in Basenjis. I have also heard about homopathic methods regarding kidney/bladder health do you have any knowledge or experience with these methods.

  • Is he on any medications? I have one that is currently on pred and had some protein in her urine that is most likely a side effect of the pred. We are hoping to get her off the pred soon but we have regular blood work done to keep track of what is going on with her various organs.

  • Protein in Urine would not be specific to Basenjis, but if you want to go to Fremont (off 680 exit at Washington) I would suggest Helen Hamilton, she is familar with the breed. http://vetinternalmedservice.com/

  • @ Ivoss no meds…... When we were getting his health exam to leave Hawaii Vet found he had cracked a tooth. So in the process of doing blood work for surgery, the Vet requested a urine sample where they found the protein level to 1.019 . The Vet wanted me to put him on Science Diet but he does not do well with grains. So I give him Blue Senior way less protein. Jaberi acts very health, looks good. Has never been sick. So I am confused.
@ Pat thank you so much I am going to wait for the blood results & if the results are not good. I will give Dr. Hamilton a call. Has anyone tried the natural kidney health vitamins... I think Nu Pet Plus????
I hate that Jaberi could be sick that is my boy, we love him so much......................

    Mahalo for your replies.

  • Since the protein level is so high, if you don't really get answers from your current Vet, you might just go to Helen for a second opinion. And until you get some kind of answer, I don't think I would give him anything, just my opinion. Helen has greyhounds so is up on sight hound problems and like I said she knows the breed. Good luck, lets us know what you find out

  • When the vet found protein in urine, did he do further testing? With my dog on pred, they found protein on basic screen but that didn't really give a good picture of what was going on, they had to do additional testing to find out if the protein was actually a sign of kidney issues or not. You may want to consult an intern medicine specialist instead of a general practitioner, especially with the grain allergies to deal with.

  • Thank you both for all the info. I will contact Helen after Jaberi blood test since I already paid for them.

    Mahalo,

  • Lets us know what you find out

  • Have you found out anything?

    Jennifer

Thank you... I wasnt sure about the food, some say too much protein, some say that protein are good for acidic urine... i will loose the vegetables for a fee days (Fred will be happy) and keep treating UTI with antibiotic and D-manoze. Kibble is a problem because he is straching his mouth and ears when eating it, That’s why we are on raw diet. He eats horse and lamb meat and he likes green peas so that was his main vegetable. I hope the problem was in the peas 😂🤣.. Thank you... we are going tomorrow on x ray to see If there are any Stones...

@Patty: Try giving him a good tasty drink immediately after his meal Mine are not drinkers (and in many years I've never had a Basenji that is) so I weakly flavour water with meat juice, veg water and actually anything tasty left over and they each have approximately third of a pint as a 'dessert' after their main meal. Ah yes, the flavored water trick. Last night I put some cut up chicken breast in a bowl, added some water and stirred for flavor and down it went. I got a copy of the urine analysis and it said PH was 8.5, trace amount of protein and Amorphous Phosphate Crystals 2-3. I just collected another sample today and it's yellow cloudy. Not red or pink.

There are two sides of the coin here. While we may trust that the vet has the knowledge, we also know our dogs. It is ultimately up to the owner to decide the right course of action. Not everyone gets it right the first time either. Neither the vet nor the owner. I have had a vew encounters with vets who think they know my dog better than me-even with test results staring them in the face. On more that a couple of occassions, I have had to step in and say, "No, this is the route I want to take." But with that decision comes education as well. I think that the consumer, as they grow with knowledge, becomes more adept at reading things on their own and the vets should start to listen and have more open minds to the owner. Just MO. Glad to see, though, that things are on the move for your baby!

Mine don't drink much either and this has always been very commonn with Basenjis as you know. To encourage mine (who're fed raw) I give them a watery drink after every meal -I do things like mix in a little vegetable water, the rinsings of tins which had contained food of any kind, the rinsings of yoghourt pots and all sorts of tastes and I find that they will drink all of what I give them . In fact when two of mine were staying with friends they were puzzled by the way they just stood waiting after they'd had their meal. They wanted their 'milk shakes' as my friend calls it! I 'm glad to hear that Buddy is doing well and hope he continues to do so.

@ljsabo: My B does the same thing. He will start peeing and not finish and then quickly lick himself. He has done this for years but otherwise seems healthy and very normal. My friend who has a 9 month old b puppy stated hers does this as well so it could be a B thing?? No, he licks the pee as it's coming out and if I turn his head away he stops and walks away.

We had the same problem when Seti was a puppy. It turned out that he had crystals in his bladder due to the food we were giving him (I think it was Wellness brand but not entirely sure). We changed his diet and it went away and has never come back. Hopefully your problem is minor like ours!
