Why raw and kibble not at the same time?

    In an earlier thread, there was some mention about not feeding raw and kibble at the same time. I fess up, I've been doing that. :|

    I often give Kipawa some cut up bison steak in his kibble. Or he gets his kibble and a little dehydrated (raw) food that has been reconstituted. He appears to have no problem processing these combinations, BUT if I'm doing something that will be detrimental to his health, I want to correct it now.

    What are the reasons not to do it? Is it difficult on the body to digest both of these when they are mixed together?

    I am not sure…but I think it is more that they do not get to full benefits of a raw diet when you feed raw and kibble.

    I feed kibble, but occasionally my guys get a RMB...usually a lamb femur.

    I THINK it has something to do with the different digestion rates of each, therefore the raw is not fully digested before it is eliminated.

    Can you see me rolling my eyes? LOL. This, along with major human diet fads about what not to eat with other foods, have been researched and found to have absolutely NO scientific basis. (Okay I haven't researched it in a few years but there was so much done on digestion etc then I doubt it has changed.) Basically the human and dog stomach acid easily handles it all, it won't stop one from being digested, it won't whatever the current claims are.

    Now raw feeders often disapprove of feeding kibble at all. Lord knows I took a lot of abuse when I went from total raw to raw and kibble. I just left the raw boards and did my own thing. :) Do I think all raw is better? Yes.

    This is the only thing I've read regarding mixing the two.

    I personally will keep them separated, but only because of sanitary reasons (myself handling the food, not worried about my B). I'll usually do a kibble meal in the morning and then give him a raw meal in the evening.

    That is precisely why I didn't feed them together generally– raw was a meal, kibble a meal.

    we still have "butchers" here in Australia. these are usually local shops, that sell meat. After they have cut up the large sides of beef, they are left with some bones. The bones you are after are the breast bone, which is usually discarded as waste, but is good for dogs. Get them to cut the bone (which is about 1 metre (about 1 yard) long), into the size that is good (mine are cut into chunks about 7.5cm (about 3 inches)) or whatever size you want. The cutting is done on a bandsaw so no effort on their behalf. The advantage is that there is no debris left for the motor mower to fling at your windows, or for insects to settle on. Even at the supermarkets there are some to be had, but find out from the meat section when they get deliveries. You will pay more at the supermarkets, but you should not pay more than necessary.

    We switched our 2 boys to raw from kibble about 6 months ago. The switch came because we were simply exhausted from walking them 3 times a day because they had loose stool (we don't have fenced in yard, so we need to walk them to go to the bathroom). Our vet recommended more fiber in their diet to help with loose stool. This intuitively just didn't resonate with us. Basenji are one of the most ancient breeds of dog… why on earth would more fiber be a solution to their problem (I know the theoretical why, but logically it was counter-intuitive)? We read many sources or literature on the raw diet and thought this would be a good switch for them. Again, they are an ancient breed so moving toward raw foods seemed appropriate and logical. It took that about a month for them to get really accustomed to eating raw chicken quarters, rabbit halves or pork shoulders but now they have no problem gulping their meal right down, bone and all (for those of you who don't feed raw, gulping is a normal behavior and bone is an essential part of the diet). Their digestion issues have vanished and we've even seen marked improvement in their destructive behavior. Two super happy boys now, two super happy Basenji owners!!

    @pacificNWbasenji: Hi folks! I have recently switched kibble to Nature's Domain from Costco. The salmon & sweet potato variety. http://www.naturesdomainpetfood.com/ I've noticed the dogs have become itchy, my girl more than my boy, and am surprised because I have had them on a variety of the popular grain free kibble varieties. Origen, Acana, EVO, Taste of the Wild & Fromm's - and they have had pretty much every flavor/ingredient combo made by manufacturers. I have not had a reaction to any of them except for stool consistency/color which is due to the richness of the kibble varieties. I really like the value of Nature's Domain being it is less than $1/pound. I know a lot of basenji/sighthound people that feed this kind of food and haven't heard anything other than good reviews. Has anyone else had a similar reaction? To my knowledge neither of them have any food allergies, as they have had salmon & sweet potato on previous occasions and included in other kibble formulas without a reaction. Even after long years the link is still working.. Thanks for posting the link.. I'll try and look if there's a reaction on my dog's too..

    @Shaye's: Really glad I checked this thread - I've always given Shaye cooked eggs because of the salmonella scare - wow - I'm sure it'll make her eat better if I can just break a whole egg in there from time to time. We have such a fear of raw anything we've never given our dog raw - except for veggies of course. Also the shells are good for them too
