Ear health

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I read this article this morning from Dogs Naturally magazine. I thought I should pass on the info. Last year, Kipawa had some seeds and a SEASHELL taken out of his ear!

  • LOL. I was going to ask if it had happened again??

  • My little BRAT, Hunter, LOVES to make his own trails when we go hiking. Last year he got one of those Foxtail seeds stuck way the heck down his eardrum. He had to be put under because it was resting on his ear drum and he wouldn't hold still for the vet!!! $500 later, he is as good as new.

Do I take him to the same hiking area, you betcha!!!!

  • :) This is odd… I post this, with the link, just because I read it and thought it would be good to pass it on. THEN yesterday evening, my little dude starts shaking his head and scratching his ear a little. Hmmmmm... gee Kipawa! I did not mean you should be doing what it said it the article! :)

So I checked his ear very carefully with a small flashlight held near his ear and I could see absolutely nothing. No odd smell/odor either. This morning, no head shaking. He hasn't been to a beach in a while, so I am pretty sure he is not collecting sea shells :) but of course I will watch him closely today. He is known at our vet's office as 'the seashell dog' as they never had to get a sea shell out of a dog's ear before.

Those foxtails are BAD! We have them here in the summer, and they are everywhere, so there is not much we can do. Yes, that kind of vet procedure can cost quite a bit. What we don't do for our fur babies!

@tanza: IMO this is just skin pigment… if it is not bothering her... would not be worried Except >> l the surface is a bit rougher than the other parts<< … which definitely fit Arwen's condition and was not just skin pigment changes.

The fanconi test needs to be ordered from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html Have you talked to Nilo's breeder about health testing. Without pedigree information his tests alone don't provide a very complete picture since disorders like PRA are late onset.

@obi1 said in Ear Rash. Dog Ear Vasculitis: Do you know of better ear muffs? Obi, I saw a funny looking knitted cap that might fit over Basenji sized ears on etsy.com. I think it would help prevent the ear edges and tips from becoming frostbitten. The shop seems to focus on Cats, but the owner appears to be willing to do special orders. Worth a try....

The dogs in the picture look so much wilder to me. I liked the smaller ears. also they talk about the dogs had short muzzles. Very cool pictures, thanks for posting the link.
