New ebook, "The Mindful Dog Owner"

Basenji Talk
  • I just published an ebook on mindful dog ownership and living. Hope you check it out and enjoy!

The Mindful Dog Owner by Lori Stephens, pNLP, CCP, ABCDT

While myriad books are published on how to train your dog and many that explore the human-canine relationship, "The Mindful Dog Owner" focuses specifically on the human perspective and walks the reader to the path of mindful connection with dogs.

Before teaching a dog to sit or heel, the mindful dog owner asks the Big Picture questions: Do I really want a dog? Am I willing to commit to a for-life relationship with a dog? Do I have the patience? Can I accept this dog for what he is? The book helps readers to contemplate their beliefs about the joys and challenges of life with a dog.

The book frames dog ownership with Zen/Buddhist concepts taught by philosophers such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Alan Watts, and Lao Tzu. It guides readers in "emptying their cup" (opening the mind for learning), and it challenges them to assess a commitment that may be as enduring as a "'til death do we part" vow. When readers "study the dog bowl," they learn how each daily activity with a dog–walking, eating, playing, or training--can be a meditation. By finding balance in each moment, as dogs do without effort, the mindful dog owner chooses The Middle Way espoused by the Buddha. In the delight of "scratching where it itches," both dogs and humans infuse each day with joy.

With the simplicity of a Zen rock garden, "The Mindful Dog Owner" advances dog ownership as a lifelong practice of graceful action, attention, and harmony.

  • Just checked your ebook.. really nice… Very informative!!

  • I just bought it, will have to drive to Starbucks (wireless) to download later. Look forward to reading it. I was recently comparing our Chipley to a Buddhist Monk, quietly observant of all around him and radiating peace and tranquility!

  • just bought it.. looks very interesting… can't see any of the pictures in it though>> not even in the amazon "look inside" preview. is this just me?

  • Your e book is really nice..Worth reading.I would like to know about your other books also.

  • Hi Sareena, my other books are listed at http://www.lori-stephens.com. They can all be purchased on Amazon except "Viral Glyph" which I'm still working on. :-)

Unfortunately, the only think photos would show is black dots in paddocks of green lucerne. I have tried taking photos but without a zoom lens it's impossible. The paddocks are about 200 yards by 600 yards. Sorry. But I did see a fox sneaking across a paddock today at 3pm in the afternoon. The dogs must have been asleep! I called them but then the fox bolted, too late for the sleepy dogs.

She was just spayed saturday..she's having trouble holding it for more than 30 minutes or so at a time…this evening she has seemed to have done better..2 hrs without having a problem..i take her out every 4 hrs..and she does her business..both..she's only lived here for 2 days..so it's really hard to get any real data yet..if it continues after a few days i will be taking her to the vet to see if it's UTI related. we're getting a crate this evening so i can see if it's a matter of her needing to be housebroken..or if she really is still having pressure from the surgery. Auriaya..our cat..seems to be in an ok mood today..she has kept to her larger part of the house..and i have been keeping Cambria to a smaller area until the two have had enough encounters on their own and ours to attempt putting them together..she's not marking in front of me. she's due for a vet visit anyway so i have scheduled it as well..we'll see if there is anything major wrong with her

If I put my arm around Nika when we're on the couch and my hand rests on her leg, she'll lick my hand for 10 minutes.

The only thing I would be concerned about with a Dachshund would be the possiblity of it having some back damage with the rough play of a basenji…or even trying to do the same acrobatics that Bs do. I have known some folks who had a lot of problems with disk and spine problems with Doxies...but I don't know if that is typical. Something to think about though...
