Two days until flight

    On Saturday Basil and I are flying to Montreal. He didn't even react to the children's gravol the vet told me to try with him so he was prescribed a sedative which worked well when I tried it last weekend.

    I'm really nervous to fly with him. He doesn't really like his soft sided kennel that he'll be flying in. I've fed him in there, put all his favourite toys in there and high value treats. I also leave it open in my room where we spend most of our time when we're inside. Sometimes he'll go in there and lay down or look for food but as soon as I zipper it closed he will start digging and pushing up on the top of it. He doesn't whine though, just acts like he's trying to escape. I've put him in it for a few minutes at a time at home and wait until he calms down which he does within a few minutes. We've also gone for a few car rides with him in it. The longest was to my sister's which is about 30 minutes away. I'm a little worried though because during two car rides he threw up a little flem in the carrier but hasn't thrown up ever in any other carrier or outside the carrier. Is this from stress? How come he's done this in this carrier and not others? I've also tried putting a puppy pad in the bottom so that he's used to that when he has to fly but all he does is dig and bunch it up in one corner… any advice as to how I can keep him from doing this? The carrier is water proof (I had to hose it out after he threw up and the water didn't even wet the bottom side of the carrier).

    I'm also really worried about security at the airport. I think I heard somewhere that you have to take the dog out when you're going through security. Is this true? I'm worried because he gets really excited if he sees people and will try to jump out of my arms or will sometimes bite me if he can't get to them... hopefully the sedative will take care of that though. Does anyone know exactly what they do with someone who has a dog at security? will they ever take him from me to inspect him? I'm worried he'll get scared or something. I'm sure everything will work out fine, I just like to be prepared. I know we'll have lots of fun there... I've already planned lots of trips to different parks and recreation areas. There's also a lot of doggie cafes there too :)

    I've never flown with a dog either…..but I hope it all works out for you. Sounds like the trip will be fun once you get past the stress of the
    flying part.

    What airline are you travelling on? They should be able to inform you of all procedures, including security. It sounds like you are taking him in the cabin with you. Is he still small enough to fit under the seat?

    Yes, you do have to take him out of the carrier when going through security, not optional. He can not stay in there when the carrier goes through X-ray and all carry on bags must be screened. You need to take him out and then you carry him through the "people" security.

    Spencer was hyper at the airport, but the sedative kicked in and he settled down once he got on the plane. Security made me take him out of the carrier while they checked him and the carrier over, then I had to put him back in the carrier so they could see that he could stand up and turn around inside. He did wet the carrier, though. Hope you both have a nice trip!

    Thank you for your replies, I'm flying with Air Canada. He's still small enough to fit, he can stand up and turn around in the carrier. I just weighed him a few days ago and he's 10 lbs. He might be smaller than a basenji puppy because the schipperke is a smaller breed. I'll let you all know how the flight goes. I know he'll enjoy Montreal… so many great recreation areas for him.

    I had only a few things in my pocket so I would not have to mess with my B Arnie and putting things in the basket as well when going through security. I practiced with Arnie getting him in and out of the carrier at home. I carried him without a leash through the metal detector but if your dog is squirmy you might want to find a leash with no metal. He almost went through the x-ray machine when a lady behind me put her luggage on it when I was trying to get Arnie out of the carrier. I was yelling for the lady to get her luggage and I was able to grab Arnie at the last minute!

    As a reference when we brought C-Me, Franie, and Trip home… that was three baby puppies (9 and 11 weeks) that we had to take out of their carrier, ggggg... and it was exciting to say the lest. But we did just fine!!!

    I do remember one time that when I was flying from NY to SFO, there was a person with a cat in a carrier that was not concerned at all that the cat was going to go through the xray... I did tell her that she needed to remove the cat, her response was "why"... my answer.. "and would you go through that?"

    We have occasionally thought about bringing in a second B, which is shocking because most of our first year with Ella was so hard. But the second year has been so good it has become a fleeting thought. But the description you gave of what happened with Cassie and Alex is exactly our fear. Ella loves to meet all other dogs on walks but is pretty submissive and I have a feeling she very well might get bullied by a new pack-mate. We think about it because Ella also stays home alone for much of the day 4-5 days a week. But I do not sense that she is stressed about it at all. She sleeps in the sun or looks out the windows most of the time. I usually have to wake her up when I come home for lunch and at the end of the day. When I am home during the day she pretty much ignores me and sleeps in the sun and looks out the window anyway. After the novelty of a new dog wore off, I think she/they would still do the same thing each day. The thought I have is, if you get a second dog do it because YOU want a second dog. Don't do it because you think that is what your dog wants.

    @Flash: Good to hear of another Aussie! The breeder I got my basenji bitch from and will get my second b from is: Kay and Ross Eldred from NSW - both lovely people and wonderful with basenjis. Where abouts are you? I'm in Canberra. I'd love to hear more about your expanding b family - particularly whether your 2 basenjis are working out well together. Well, well, well, what a small world it is ??? :). Saba is by Kay and Ross's gorgeous Zulu, out of a Wazazi bitch, and Ochre is by their stunning Rusty, also out of a different Wazazi bitch :). I think I like my Wazazi/Jebelmarra puppies… I only just, (a couple of weeks ago), emailed Kay, after Rusty's fabulous win at Sydney Royal... I am in Tassie, about 35 kms south of Hobart, on a wonderful 13 acres, with my hubby, and 2 daughters... The B's love it too, although no free running on the property, for them :p, but we have a large fully fenced, (9 feet high), off lead area, for them and the Cattle Dogs too.... I got Saba first, and really had no thoughts of getting another for a while, Yeah right !!! 12 months later, along came Ochre :D. (Im very glad they only come into season once a year, or Dog knows how many we would have by now...). Now another 12 months and I might be getting another, I must have rocks in my head !!! Perhaps you will do the same thing too, and get another one next year :D. They are very moorish, arent they ??? A bit like chippies, hey... We had no problems at all with introducing Saba and Ochre. Saba was a touch put out, but he was soon playing very happily with his new pal... They get on very well together. Ochre takes everything in her stride, and I think Saba would love another little girl in his harem... I dont predict I will have any problems, if I do get another little girl, (thats what I am hoping for !!!), this year, either. Ochre is a very temperamentally stable little lass, who would adjust quickly to another girl, I think !!! Also, during the last 4-5 months, we have added another Cattle Dog as well. He currently lives in the house with the 2 B's, and he is about 6 months old now. Ochre gives him a hard time, and does get a little cranky with him at times, otherwise she is ok. Saba was being very dominant with him, in the house, so in the house they arent let out together, (either Nosh, the Cattle Dog, or Saba is loose, and the other is crated...), but they are happy to race around the off lead area we have, together, which Im pleased about... Saba isnt as tolerant with other dogs, particularly other males, but, we deal with that ;). They are both our first Basenji show dogs, we show the Cattle Dogs, which we are enjoying. Saba is having a few issues on the table at the moment, and we are working on this, and Ochre is showing very well, with pleasing results so far :). She is going to be a very slow maturer, (thanks Rusty, and to a lesser degree, her Mum Electra :D), so her time will come later :). My OH and I lived in Canberra, in the early 90's, both nursed at Woden Valley Hospital. Great memories of the place. First in Waniassa, (sp?), then Bungandore, (sp?), till we came back home to Tassie... So what is the breeding of your first Jebelmarra dog ??? Then obviously the next question is, who is the potential parents of this years puppy ??? Looks like we will be able to pass the time away, firstly, hoping for our new puppy to be conceived, then "grown", then born, then the VERY long time waiting to get it at 8-10 weeks. I think I am ahead of you slightly, cos Electra was mated on the 16th April, your guys are "having fun", at the moment, I think... SORRY ;):p:)... Gee, this has turned into a bit of an epic :D

    Kip doesn't mind the rain at all, he loves the snow! too bad I live in england he might not see it again :( any way back on topic… Kip doesn't like the bath (well no surprise there I don't know a dog that does like the bath) but he loves going and swimming in the pond at the park and he doesn't seem to mind the rain at all

    imbj, Yup..that was the beach we went to. You've been there too…man what a pain! I swear. We actually were at Pillar Point first to get lunch and then decided to take our B's to that beach...Yah...never again!

    Doggy Swim Day?

    My Basenji would never be able to do it. She loves to swim, but isn't that nice with other dogs. My Husky mix would totally love it though. :) We'd have to use a crane to get him back out. I have a "doggy swim day" almost everyday. The shelter I work with built a lake out back, and on the hot days we let all the dogs go play in it.
