Basenji - Toronto, Ontario

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • I've been thinking about getting a Basenji and believe I am now ready. Are there any Basenjis available in or around the Greater Toronto Area? I'd be willing to adopt one as well.

The Basenji would be in a house with a loving family of four with two young adults (16 and 18). Easy access to a large park and a small, fenced backyard in a suburban area.

  • You may want to try a couple of breeders from the BCOC Website. I know Sue Wilcox has some older B's available, she does have an adoption process and you will have to contact her. Her contact info is available on the BCOC website:

Other than that, I'm not sure who has available dogs.

I'm not breeding this year and probably won't for at least three to five years.

  • Thanks for the responses, I was looking through the BRAT website and am thinking about this dog:

Only question is, will they be able to deliver him to Toronto and any idea how much it will cost?

  • You can also contact Bob Brewster in the TO area. He does Basenji Rescue's for Canada. You can private message me for his e-mail address. I know recently there was one special needs that was either partially blind or completely blind and one other one close to the Kingston area. If you are interested in the contact info for these, let me know through private message as well.

  • BRAT can and does sometimes arrange transport runs up to Canada. And occasionally there are Canadian B's listed, too! I think what is most important is fit, so if you are the perfect fit for a Basenji in the nearby States, they'll find some way to get him/her to you. There's no harm in filling out an application with BRAT and seeing what happens. If Titan doesn't work out, there are always more in the pipelines, and it seems there are many more out East, near Toronto, than, say, my area.

You have many options, especially if you're open to rescue. Good luck!

  • is from Colorado and the other one is from Sweden-I live in Canada
get a Basenji from BRAT-they make wonderful members of your family!

  • I have a Basenji - red/white 17 months - in Ottawa

  • We recently purchased a male Basenji from Blackwing kennel, East of Ottawa. He is a wonderful, clever and feisty guy (8 months old now). You should contact Kathie, I believe she still has some pups from the same litter available.

Hi there, Funny enough, my guy is from a breeder in Pembroke - just down the road from Ottawa! They've had litters on and off over the years, but I'm not sure whether they're active at the moment (last I heard, one of the moms was in a "false heat" and they might try again with her in the summer). In any event, it's easiest to politely contact whatever active breeders you can find in Ont/QC, and I find they're very nice and often able to refer you to others should their bookings be full. That's how I did it. Best of luck!!

Where are you located? I have several breeders to recommend in the midwest! In the meantime, checking the BCOA list as Tanza suggested is a good place to start. Be warned though, puppies are being born this time of the year and many breeders have waiting lists!

Where are you located? There are actually a lot of options. Sadly, as of late, not a lot of basenjis being posted to BRAT. There are other rescues, including a great rescue for basenjis in Florida and California. Also, if you can't find a suitable rescue, please consider young and adults from breeders that they have decided don't fit their breeding plan. They also need and make great pets.

Check the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites. Many breeders will have listed their fall breedings [this is my assumption, as mine have been there for months] on their own websites. Do you also have children or just the dogs? 4 dogs does not sound chaotic at all to me… but I have two middle-school kids and their plethora of friends over here daily... plus my not-small-enough gaggle of dogs. Chaos is a given living [or visiting] in my house!

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
