How many baths?

Breeder Talk
  • How many baths?

Zero. Zippo. Nil. I can not recall the last time I bathed one of my kids. Not even for shows.

With the amount of rolling on wet towels, I see no need to ever bath them. Which is why I like them so darned much.

  • :DSinbaje, thats too funny… I was just going to ask if rolling on wet towels counted...if it did then Oakley bathes himself everyday!!

  • This is a very interesting post. Mine don't get bathed at all. I do just wipe them down before showing particularly if it is a wet and muddy show ground. When they get dirty at home they clean themselves up very efficiently. We never have less than white whites once they've done this. Jewel being the senior gets a 'little help from her friends'!

  • I usually bathe mine every 3-4 months. If something is being shown, I bathe it more frequently.

  • When we were showing, baths were done the night before we left for each show. Now, they get two a year, once when the coats are shedding and the other right before cold weather is going to start. Of course, the muddy situations sometimes occur and that throws in another one or two a year. But they are such clean dogs, they pretty much take care of it themselves. But when we had pups did bathe more frequently until each accepted it as a matter of course.

@senjisilly just now saw your reply. Thanks for the pedigree website. I knew about it and it’s a great resource.

@tanza I don't believe there was a limit to the number of letters, though I wasn't paying much attention to whether the field stopped me from continuing. Tanza is nice! I was actually surprised no one has claimed the name :D

@tanza I'm definitely attending the next show as a recon trip. Not sure how the work here but if they're similarly easy to enter as the ones in the US, I do want to show Roux! LOL that's a hilarious saying; I absolutely appreciate a smart lady over cluelessness haha :face_with_tongue:

@zande - So true Zande, the test is 65.00 and considering the heartbreak and cost of caring for a Fanconi Basenji (try shoving down 20+ pills a day) it is something that anyone breeding, even Back Yard Breeders or Puppymills should always do... Also if someone happens to get a puppy or is unsure about the breeder they did get a Basenji puppy from, spend the 65.00 and have the DNA Fanconi test done... again it is a cheek swab that you order from OFA.org

@lindenbaum I've long forgotten about this thread. If I am remembering correctly, I left it up so that people could read the flags that it may be a puppy mill and be able to make their own decision regarding that. I am deliberately wording that as "... may be... " because I do not have any personal interaction with "HH" and therefore cannot speak to it. (please note that I removed your "HH available breeds" list, no offense)

During the summer I bathe my dogs every couple of weeks – more if I feel they need it. I use a protein/lanolin shampoo by biogreen, and we've never had a problem with dry skin; leaves their coats so shiny and soft, and doesn't smell funky like some dog shampoos do.
