Female in Heat

Basenji Talk
  • Not sure if I posted this under the right heading, but this seemed the closest. Maya is currently "in heat". As of Friday, it will have been 3 weeks. How long do they stay in heat? We want to have her fixed but I can't remember how long it lasts. So far I've some up with 21 days for most breeds, but I know Basenji's can be different. She's chewed through 2 diapers now and I can't wait for it to be over.

    Thanks for your info.

  • 30 Days is considered normal for a Basenji…..

  • Thanks. One more week then : )

  • As far as diapers go, my breeder recommended this, as basenjis are quick to tear them off and the cost can add up.
Buy the smallest size boy's toddler underpants you can find. Cut a hole for the tail. Put a pantyliner in. I bought a 5 pack last year, and since you can custom cut the hole, it stays on a little better. I got the 2T size & had to safety pin it so it wouldn't fall off of Callie, but it was $3 for 5 & well worth it.

Thanks so much. I had another friend recommend this as well. Maya still tried to chew them, but it's much easier on the pocket book : )

@zande - And why I have two bitches...LOL! Or only neutered males if I have one.... while neutered males can have "safe sex".... solves the problem of unwanted litters!

Wouldn't feel bad about the behavior of your basenji. I got mine six years ago and he acts a lot like yours. I kennel trained him and when I have company he goes in the kennel till he settles down. When I let him out I just tell people to be still till he checks them all out then he is fine. A lot of times he acts like he is going to attack me if he doesn't get his way vicious snarls and all, but I have learned it is just that an act . He also acted vicious around other dogs but after introducing them properly he gets along great. We have recently got him a new basenji mixed sister to play with, after the snarls and viciousness he loves her very much. I wouldn't be afraid to rehome your basenji, it at least give someone a chance to see what they can do.

Hi Sarah, congratulations on your new puppy! I have two females that are 3 and 5; they've lived together for 1.5 years. When they met, the younger one wanted to assert herself as the dominant one, and the older one acquiesced…. they've determined their roles, so there really isn't an issue here. The younger one, Lola, is a "licker" and often initiates playtime. If the older one doesn't want to play, she will snark at Lola, who then decides that the new game is to clean Becca's ears. :) I think the guideline to introduce them in a neutral place is a good one until you know how they will interact when your puppy goes to visit Bananas. Hugs and roos! Patty

LOL I often bring warm laundry up from the basement & fold it on the bed. When I dump the pile of warm clothes on the bed I am guaranteed to have 2 Basenjis in the middle of the pile. Also, we just moved into a new house with heat registers on the floor. This is Jibini's FIRST encounter with such a thing; every other house we've been in had them on the ceiling. I was waiting to see how long it would take him to catch on….for about a week he persisted in his usual warmth-seeking behavior (cuddling with me on the couch). But on a particularly cold night he was walking by the living room heat register and he stopped in his tracks, did an about face and stood looking at the register in disbelief. Initially he kept standing & rotating so as to "warm" his whole body....then he curled up for a nap in front of the register. Silly dogs!!

I never bother with "diapers" or "panties" for my girls when they are in season. They keep themselves so clean that there is rarely any spotting in the house. If they do spot any, the boys are more than eager to clean the area.
