Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Gizmo is up for his 1 year vaccine, and I want to make sure he gets what is best for him.

I remember reading on these forums some people stating that Basenjis should not get "all in one" vaccines.

Is this true, if so why? And what should he be getting?

  • Many basenji's have reactions to the seras of lepto and corona. So we do not get them. There are may strains of lepto and only two or three seras in the vaccines, and usually not the kind that are prevelant in your area. I also don't give rabies and the vaccines together because of reactions as well.

At one year mine will get a booster for DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus) and Rabies, but they will be at least 3 to 4 wks apart. Then they will be on a 3yr booster schedule.

  • Well Gizmos vaccine appointment didn't quite go as planned. On our walk to the vet Gizmo urinated blood!

So the vet visit turned into urine testing and a 10 day antibiotics cure…the vaccine is postponed because you can't take the vac when on antibiotic, and then you have to wait some weeks after before the vac can be taken.

Thankfully it was nothing serious. Testes showed nothing abnormal.
Gizmo has had a foreskin/penis infection and despite me cleaning him regularly, it has most likely either gone up into his urinal tract, or some blood vessels in the foreskin or on the penis has burst and drops of blood come out.

My theory is Gizmo did this on purpose just to avoid the shot! ;)

  • What a relief to find out it was not super serious. And yes, I like your theory about Gizmo doing this to avoid his shot. We had a beautiful bi-colour black and white cat named Miss Mew that could "tell" she was going to the vet - even if we did not use the word "vet" or she did not see her travel crate. She honestly could read our minds. My husband and I would just have a quick glance at each other to communicate that it was time to get ready for the vet, and she would scramble under our lowest bed. This from a cat who never went under a bed in her life.

    Trust me, our animals KNOW!

  • Yeah, I was an wreck sitting in the waiting room for the results. All kinds of scenarios going through my head…testicular cancer or something...oh god.

Funny thing, Gizmo does not mind going to the vet. He actually happily enters the vet building. Gets a lot of attention from all the staff.
The thing he does hate is the wait. This is the only time I actually hear him make any sound. He will whimper and protest. Trying to pull his way in different directions, but the floor is so slippery to his feet he just "walks" on the spot...makes me laugh.

@elbrant said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: divisive I guess I'm a dreamer.... but I believe that adults can have discussions and opinions without resorting to name calling and rude remarks. Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

There are different types of rabies vaccine. The ones most likely to cause a reaction have thimerosal in them. A friend's dog (not a Basenji) had an anaphylactic reaction to a rabies shot, and she would have lost him had the vet not still been present and able to counter it with epinephrine. In the future they made sure the shots he got did not have thimerosal. Usually reactions aren't quite so dramatic, but something to keep in mind. I also used blood titers to avoid unnecessary vaccinations with my dogs. More expensive, but worth it!

Kipawa had this happen with one of his shots. It took about 2 months to go away, and started to really reduce in size with massage. The area is perfectly fine now - you'd never know anything odd had been there.
