• Thank you and I will try brown rice. Very kind of you for the help.

  • Actually my 4yo B Ruby has to have white rice (medium or long grain)…her system doesn't process brown rice and she just poops it out whole. The vet was the one that pointed out to me one time when she was sick.

  • @AC~Akeyla:

    @etzbseder:

What time is she throwing up? Does she drink normally? When/what does she eat?

It is usually in the morning, but I try to get something in her stomach so that doesn't happen. Yes, I have also heard that it could be bile. She also drinks normally and she eats at 8am, 1pm and 6pm.

I think that it could be because of an empty tummy. My 5mo Liyah, and one of my adults (Ruby 4yo) get sick in the morning if I don't give them a snack right before bed. Have you tried giving a couple of biscuits right before bed…that is usually all it takes. I do also give them both biscuits in the morning if I'm going to exercise them before they have breakfast. Brando also gets biscuits when the girls do (can't leave him out :D:D), even though he's never had an issue with empty tummy.

    How old is your girl?

  • 6pm to 8am is a long time between meals for many Basenjis. Do you give a bedtime snack? Mine eat at 7am, 5pm, and a snack at 10pm. If I skip their snack or put off their morning meal too long they will vomit bile.

That is what I do also….

And it has been said that brown rice is harder to digest (many Vets will agree and suggest white), so if using rice for upset tummy's.... you really are better off to use white ....

  • Akeyla is 5months old. So I should give her something to eat before bed huh? I'll give that a try. Thanks for everyone's help!

At that age for sure she needs something before bedtime…

She also drinks normally and she eats at 8am, 1pm and 6pm. The food she eats is Nutro Max puppy wet and dry food with carrots or rice mixed in. Sometimes she gets boiled chicken.

My female was being fed Nutro when I brought her home with me. She used to get acid reflux a lot & eventually wouldn't want to eat the Nutro - so, it could be the dog food….
My male (at 4 - 5 months) vomits when fed carrots.
But I agree for sure with everyone else on here - empty belly. I've awakened to that pre B barf noise a few times - luckily the bathroom is adjoined to our bedroom!

  • Not too long ago I posted a thread about Akeyla vomiting and the meds the vet gave us. Well… an update for everyone she has vomited three times since being on her second set of meds and we took her back to the vet on Thursday and now he has put her on a steroid called Predinisone and a nausea med called Cerenia. Has anyone heard or used the meds before on their B's? I'm worried about all the meds messing up her immune system. Any advise?

    Thanks 😞

  • Does the vet tell you way Akeyla is vomiting as to what is causing it? When Jaycee did that he had us give her 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of Mylanta every 4 to 6 hours this got her over it and so far been fine ever since. I am not crazy about steriods but I know sometimes they are a must. I do not know what you feed or when but Jaycee's food is there all time she eats what she whats and when she wants to she knows her bedtime and she will eat about same time ever night. Far as med's I would look them up on internet and see what they have to say about them. Let us know how you are doing. Good luck and hopefully these meds help.

  • Yeah he said it was an inflammitory infection. I really have issues with this vet because we have been in his office three times and he still hasn't fixed the problem. I think we are going to try another vet and see what he/she says. Anyways I try to feed her every night before bed so she doesn't have an empty stomach in the morning.

  • I just put on here for one that had diarrhea to try this and you might also dry toast, rive and bananas, I would use baby food bananas. You can also buy for babies Pedlite liquid that might help the tummy.
I think I would get me a new vet something not correct we have the golden rule strike three and your out. We have not had trouble with our dog and cat vet but we did with our bird and we changed vets.
Let us know take care and have a nice day.

  • I would feed the last meal later in the evening. My vet usually prescribes Reglan for nausea. I had never heard of Cerenia so I looked it up and it is a new medication for vomiting/motion sickness.

I posted this on another thread but thought it would be appropriate here.

His symptoms were spitting up but not projectile vomiting and diarrhea. He gets fed twice a day but as a pup was fed three times a day.

I had a young B that I thought had IBSID because he had some of the symptoms but not all. This started when he was about 5-6 months old and I thought it was food allergies at first. He had been on Prednisone which did not help at all and I thought it made his symptoms worse. It turned out he had an esophagus problem, along with acid digestive problems, and is now on prescription intestinal dog food, Prilosec, and Reglan. He has to eat his food with the bowl elevated so he is not bending down to eat.

  • jonny does this about once every other week, sometimes less. hansel has done it a couple of times. usually after eating grass when we walk. they are SO fast!

  • Is your B any better? My vet had me add Purina ForiFlora to my B's food once a day. She had intestinal issues when she was around Akeyla's age & the Fortiflora would even things out quite nicely - maybe you could ask about that?

  • This is an unpleasant question to ask, but I'll put it out there … when one of my Bs throws up the entire bowl of food that she just ate, she then tries to eat the regurgitated food. My first instinct is to not let her, but I wonder if, from a nutritional or medical standpoint, is there any reason to not let her eat it?

This is not a regular occurrence; I've had her over a year, and it's only happened twice.

    All advice is much appreciated.

When a bitch has puppies, that is typically in the wild how they feed them.. and some bitches will do that with their domestic litters, my Mickii did… My Maggii did it once with her puppies, quite by accident..she had just eaten her dinner and got in the puppy pen with her pups.. they ran up and batted her in the throat.. which was a trigger for her to regurgitate.. pups were happy, she was PISSED...gggg so IMO there is no reason not to let her... sometimes the regurgitation happens for no reason... just like a "knee jerk reaction".... I let mine eat theirs if they want... of course when you have more then one... you usually find "all" of them wanting in on the "goodies"....

Ha, ha, ha…ain't that the truth! Rarely have to do a cleanup at my house when it happens for that very reason...I usually can't get there quick enough before the others start feasting away! :D:D:D
