My Puppy Wont Let Me Sleep Now!!!

Basenji Talk
  • Ok, well, technically that is an exaggeration :p But she is being a bit cheeky at the moment… Let me explain!!

I have recently bee "provisionally" diagnosed with menieres (takes at least a year to diagnose officially, but anyway....) and one of the symptoms of that are really bad spells of vertigo. And one of the side effects i get from that is getting REALLY tired. Like, going to fall asleep any second tired  So we have been tucked up in bed by 9:30 most nights recently, 10pm absolute latest! As usual, Delilah my pug sleeps under the covers at my feet and Maya sleeps on the pillow next to me :D She is a complete angel, i have to say that. She gets on "her" pillow, curls up, goes to sleep and doesn't move all night til we wake up. But this week, obviously we've been going to bed too early  She has been waking me up at 5:30am on the dot (ok ok, 6am today, i got a lie in!!!), very sweetly i might add - face licking and very gentle tapping on my face with paws til i wake up! But still, it would be nice to sleep in til half 6 in the morning maybe, 7am would be fantastic :p I cant possibly be mad at her as she is SO excited when i do wake up, she wiggles, wags and yodels at me and just wants loads of cuddles :D But would an extra half hour kill her, really??? :D I am exhausted now. Still another couple of hours left at work and im already nearly asleep!!!

Anyway, sorry for the pointless post. Maya is just incredibly adorable and the cutest thing ever. Even when she wakes me up its cute!! But that is the one thing that i would change about her - give me an extra half an hour lie in Maya!!!!

  • You might not find her so sweet when the clocks change!!

  • Oh God, i hadn't thought of that lol!!

Someone might be sleeping downstairs in a crate when that happens… :D

  • I haven't slept past 5:30 am more than a handful of times in the last year! Our older dog (not a B) hears the neighbor's truck, when he leaves for work, and decides that is when she should go out! Fortunately for me, most of the time (notice I say MOST) both dogs go back to sleep after a quick trip to the yard.

@dagodingo - Note that if flying, most airlines have age limits and when I fly American (in cabin) age must be 10wks.

From what I've seen (well bred) basenji puppies range from $900-$1500 depending on show quality. Like Krunzer said, puppies are cute but are A LOT of work. I've raised 2 basenjis and 2 goldens and while a lot of it is the same.. the basenjis seem to discover new ways to be mischievous that my goldens would never have dreamed of doing. Be prepared to replace many MANY things because odds are they will destroy them! Elliot isn't a climber but my last one was so even things high up on tables and counters were not safe from him. My current B is 10 months and going though the "I forgot every good behavior you taught me" phase. This includes trying to jump off the table at shows to play with the other dogs and the judge @______@. Now that I've strayed away from the topic.. A BRAT, rescue or retired show dog might be the best fit for you! I know of several breeders who will sell their retired show dogs because they simply can't keep them all. Before I got my first B I looked into purchasing a finished champion to learn how to show dogs with but ended up with a puppy.

@myran: Thh only thing you have to keep in mind that girls go into heat which can be a hassle whining male having to guard and often separate them during the critical period. I have several basenji friends that have 2 even 5 boy´s and it works as they are of different ages puppies are integrated in to the pack when they are less then 12 weeks. But it takes a strong leader males rarely fight to kill more to show who´s the leader and when the other gives up they calm down not so with females they can be really nasty. Are you going to show them and maybe in the future breed then yes a girl but if not i´d choose a boy as it´s cheaper to neuter a boy then sterilize a girl.Especially as you have to let her have one heat before surgery maybe it´s different over there. And as I said before you can have boy´s together that aren´t neutered. But as they´ve mentioned before go with your breeders recommendations. Good Luck,Michelle In the US, price is usually the same for a spay as it is for a neuter…. and usually people opt to spay before the first season in the US.

I would suggest waiting until you get the little guy. Indi didn't have a name for abut 2 days. We had all these names in mind and none of them fit. Thats my two cents anyway (oh ya and because we did that I have a cool costume for him on haloween but I don't think I am going to get any cooperation on his end)
