Strange behavior?

Basenji Talk
  • Maybe this is not strange behavior, but I have never had any other dog do this. I have noticed that every time Cali gets a dental bone, meaty bone, pig snout, etc. she takes a couple of bites and then brings it to me. She plops in down on my lap or in front of my feet or if I am laying down she brings it close to my mouth. Its as if she wants me to take a bite. I pretend like I am taking a bite and then I give it back to her and she takes a couple of bites and brings it back to me. I am not complaining because I think this is very sweet. When she has chewed as much as she wants she proceeds to hide it somewhere in the house. Do any of your B's do this? Cali is only half Basenji and the other half is some sort of Terrier. She does not do this with her dog food, just her bones. I no longer give her rawhide because she throws up afterwards. She loves pig snouts so I am really surprised that she would even consider sharing. Maybe she is trying to tell me something else:) Or maybe she is trying to be nice to make up for all of the times that she has made me want to pull my hair out:D Any thoughts on this behavior?

  • Oh what a sweet!! I've never seen any of my Bs do this…although maybe they need to spend some time with Cali :D

They do like to bury their rawhides or pig snouts in the couch LOL :)

  • No. Your dog is an exceptional sweety.

My only B that can have rawhides will act like he's going to tear your arm off when you take it away.

I'd leave him out for as long as he wants to be out in the snow - but not without a fence yard. As Tanza said, it only takes one car – or one annoyed neighbor -- to take him out, and he won't be adverse to taking on coyotes, so why risk it? Most people seemed to have huskies or malamutes when I grew up in Alaska and they were seldom indoors. They'd even curl up and go to sleep in the snow, while it was snowing, and remain under a blanket of the stuff!

This is really the one thing that Jaycee is good at she will go after her ball a toy anything and play and play. Jaycee seems to have set her bedtime at night at about 9:00 to 9:30. So my son will play throwing her ball or toy what ever she wants getting her really tried before she goes to bed every night. Sometimes she good for 15 mins other times half hour but she has fun. I hope she don't stop this is fun.

Sometimes picking them up in a "there is no other choice" manner is less coddling than stringing them along with treats. Don't get me wrong, you know I love to use treats for training. But sometimes when you spend a whole lot of time and effort trying to coax the dog to cooperate, they are getting some reward out of that. A lot more reward than they would get if you just picked them up, and made them cooperate….(kinda like toddlers!) But does sound like there might be more going on. I hope you find some answers. The reluctance to go out at 6 am (gads!) might get better as the weather warms up :)
