Between toes…

  • My Bella has a problem with getting sores between her toes. This happens maybe once a month between a different pair of toes each time. The area becomes red and swollen. Sometimes it is hard to the touch, at times they may become infected and fluid filled before eventually getting better. The vet suggested it may be an allergy to grass, but she only goes out to potty or to go for a walk. She and our cats don't get along well, so my husband suggested that the cats may have scratched her. But I don't see a wound initially that would indicate a scratch or bite. Does any other Basenji slave out there have any problems like this? If so, I am open for suggestions…

  • My friend's dog at work has this problem. He is not a basenji. He does however have an allergy to soy, palms, poutlry, oak pollen and a handful of other things. the spaces between his toes would get beet red or have dried blood in them.

you could try some benedryl. I buy the childrens chewables and dose it out by weight.

or you could test the diet and try one of those foods that is hyper sensitive.

when Beta was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease, the vets cut out wheat, rice, and corn. They said to find a diet that would mimick foods that were found in the basenji's native landscape.

i believe there is an allergy panel that a vet can do, but it is really expensive.

you could test it by feeding your basenji boiled chicken only and see if there is improvement. that may be a cheap way to test a food allergy theory.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

Good news. After finishing a 14 day course of antibiotics, using antifungal/antibacterial wipes, and a switch in food, Mojo's toes are almost back to normal. Fingers (and toes) crossed that whatever he had doesn't come back. (The comment about dogs thinking bitter apple is a great basting sauce was cute. ) [image: 1529958787378-mojo-x27-s-toes-21-jun-2018-sm.jpg]

You have no idea how encouraging it is to hear this. We took our 1 year old in for a dislocated toe…apparently he has lax joints and that toe needed to be amputated, at that time they x-rayed the other paws and the other back one showed up with lytic bone. The vet said this could be infection or cancer and to amputate that as well. We thought that was extreme at the time and didn't do it. Instead we took anticbiotics to clear up the infection...5 months later we are awaiting surgery in 2 days to have it amputated and sent off for histology. He's been on antibiotics for months and the new ones have taken care of the swelling but now his lymph nodes are enlarged and he is obviously sick. We have had every test possible without amputating and no answers as to whats going on...so happy your dog is going to be fine and have hope that our boy will get the same diagnosis.

Thank you for your advice. Any Idea what causes interdigital cysts? Are they fairly common, and if so… would there be a chance she would get cysts elsewhere?
