I FINALLY know what Hollie is!!

    I've had Hollie for 3 1/2 years now. She is a Basenji mixed with Whippet. This I have know for a while…. What I didn't now was that this type of mix was called a Lurcher (also known as a longdog).

    I'm sure alot of you know what they are, but it was new to me. A Lurcher is derived from sighthound crosses and is bred to hunt a specific type of game.

    I always knew Hollie was a double sighthound, but I didn't know there was a specific name for this kind of cross.

    I've learned something new!! :D

    Lurchers can complete in lure coursing with the National Lure Coursing Club, if that interests you. The NLCC is just starting up and is being spearheaded by the former ASFA Region 7 director.

    I have heard of greyhounds mixed with Scottish Deerhounds, and called lurchers. I didn't know it applied to other sighthound crosses. I learn many new things every day!

You know who his parents are, so... he carries their genes. Do you suspect that you don't actually know who the parents are? If that might be true, then consider doing a DNA test. But if you are confident that those are his parents, then you already know the answer. Enjoy him for who he is. Yours.

    Glad to hear that you heard him sing..Otis just started as well, very rarely but every now and then..and I just love it.

    @Basenjimamma: Andrew, What an awesome job. I love baking, dogs and healthy living..I envy you. Yes, it's a great job. I (and Shango ;-P) love it. He comes to work with me each day! BUT….you have a brindle, so there is mutual envy :-)

    THe place we kennel our dogs (also go to day camp every other Friday) love our Basenjis. They beg us to bring them back and someone there has asked us every time we have been there about when we were getting our new pupy since we called and asked how old they had to be to start going. That place is missing out big time.
