Emma's first dialogue

Member Introductions
  • Hi,

My name is Swapnil and I live in Arlington,Texas with my gf and my 11 month old Besanji Lab mix . She has been with us since she was 8 weeks old and is one thoroughly spoilt Basenji who has started to undergo beginner obediance training at petsmart .

I have been reading the forums and many of the stories in there are a representation of the times me and emma have shared .

She stays in the crate while I am at work and is let out when I come home for lunch to check up on her (A luxury which no amount of high gas prices would make me forego) . Earlier on , we did have a lot of issues of destruction of walls, carpet when she was left at home on a leash . Since we have started crating her , things have been much more calm and composed and there have been no "What the hell !!!" moments as soon as you open the door !!!!

She has rights to every single peice of furniture which I own and loves to sleep on the bed with us and cuddle to get warm (Hence the username !!!) . The love seat I own should be renamed to a petseat by now since emma has decided it as a perfect place to doze off when mum and dad are enjoying those movie nights .

She can be quite stubborn at times which I have comes to realize can be overcome by an onslaught of well - deserved treats .(She is more greeedy that she is stubborn :-P )

At the moment , I am trying to overcome her habit of jumping on people in excitement when they come home . It is something which onle happens to new people or people who she does not live with .When we come i through the door and let her out she will jump for a while but then will immediately sit down looking at us and wagging her tail in excitement which is when she gets coddled . She gets real excited around guests at first but tends to calm down about 10-15 minutes later after which she probably will get one of her ropes or the kong and try to nudge it into their hand as an indication of "Play with me !!!!" .

All in all , one of the best decision I ever made was to rescue this little pup whose only information I know was that she had the eyes of an angel and was part labrador who is not probably 40 % lab and 60 % besanji .

Wonderful way to share your experiences and thoughts on a first year with basenji in your life.. I second the thoughs written by Andrew….health, temperament and having a breeder available 24/7 is key....

Welcome Jackie. The ideas about leaving Akila alone for a short time and then lengthening the time have worked in the past for us. The soft things with familiar smell also should help. One other trick we have tried is to leave a TV or radio on at low levels. Talk radio or TV seems to work, but not too loud! Welcome back to the wonderful world of Basenjis Tom

@mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

@wizard: They look like they are perfectly matched - and neither one looks "fat". I have uploaded the contrasting photos. Go have a kick

Yep, we do agree on most things (bossy? or boss?)(both I think-it has something to do with me being a control freak-I like orderly fashion). True there are some dogs/bitches that will just not get along EVER. If I do leave with dogs that typically don't get along-grouch,snarl,sneer,etc.-I'm sorry-but they're separated. Either in separate rooms or crates. If you can't get along when I'm here, then chances are you won't when I'm not!! I did train other people and their dogs (notice I put people first) but as you say-meager. Now I just train my own, the occasional consult and focus on grooming, and the B's. I would love to make a living with just dogs, but, alas, that is really hard to do!
