Lure Coursing Brag!

  • Mauigirl (Nicki & Liz) & I (Carrie) went to the Greyhound Specialty in Moreland, GA on Sunday October 25th.
Mauigirl's Zip won 1st place & Best of Breed!!!
    Booger won 2nd!!!
Lola & Riley both had great practice runs, and they can't wait to get started competing in the next couple of months.

All that being said…. I'm also checking for lurkers who might be interested in coursing in Georgia. Right now, there's just the two of us & we would love to see more basenjis!!!! Anybody who might want to check it out but is unsure of how to get started or where to go, let us know. Its a ton of fun!

  • Congrats to you, Mauigirl, Zip and Booger!! :)

  • Congratulations! I'll see if Jozie is interested now that she is grown up. She will run a bag on a fishing line until her tongue hangs out so hopefully she will transfer that to actual coursing. Post on the gabasenji list and see if any of those folks will give it a go. :)

Practice runs Basenji 1 and 2 are Lola and Riley

Middle column 2/3 way down are the Zip and Booger's prelim and final runs.

My favorite ones by far are of Lola. Who knew she was so long?!?

  • @YodelDogs:

    Oh that would be fun!!

  • Congrats :) I can't wait to see if my kids enjoy it. They aren't a year old yet

You can take them to practice at any age… in fact it is the perfect time to "peak" their interest in coursing the "bunny"... I would take mine as young as 10 to 12 wks... and let them just run up and down a short straight away chasing the bunny....

  • Thanksgiving weekend there is supposed to be some coursing and racing events in Southern Cal. I think the coursing is at Prado Park and the is LGRA racing on the Saturday is in Orange. I will be down to visit the pups and we plan to take the dogs to course and race so they are nice and tired when we go over to visit puppies. So if you bring your out to practice let me know and we will look for you.

We didn't get involved until this summer, when Booger was over a year old & Lola was only about 6 months old. We went to a practice & they both enjoyed it, but Lola is the one who really seems to LOVE it! She goes every time Booger goes, both to practices & trials (all the trials we have been to have practice, time allowing). This past weekend we ran her on a full 900 yard course (she's almost 11 months old), and she really enjoyed it. Practice is also the best time to learn to use a sliplead. Its not hard, but takes time a couple of tries to get the hang of it. So definitely get yours out to practice. Its so much fun!!! And by the time they are a year & can participate in trials, they will know what's going on & you will, too.

  • I will have to pratice some straight aways. Unfortunately, we will be in yuma, az for a show. Sorry we are going to miss you at prado

  • This coming weekend there is LGRA and NOTRA in Orange County. My mom has the information. I think there is also some racing in December in Orange County. Don't know what the show schedule looks like or if these conflict with any. I do know this time of year is the racing season in So Cal since the parks are available.

Yay glad to see some more local interest! As far as training, there is a group called SONG (Sighthounds of North Georgia) that does informal practices once a month or so depending on man power & weather. These practices are a great way to introduce a new dog to the lure. However, for most dogs its an instinctual thing & they don't need much training. Lola & Callie both caught on to it their first time. I just let them both watch other dogs doing it first, then let them go & they did their thing. Website for SONG: http://www.nghounds.info/index_files/Page430.htm It doesn't get updated frequently, but go to the lure coursing practice tab, scroll to the bottom & there are instructions to get on the e-mail list for upcoming practices. Hope to see you lure coursing soon!

@Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

Not quite, he still needs 5 more points towards his AKC field championship but will have an opportunity at those in March.

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)
