Basenjis near Worcester, MA?

  • I love to keep my B socialized, and he's met lots of other dogs (mostly at least twice as big as he is), but he has NEVER met another Basenji (at least since I've had him). Any one in the Worcester area up for a meeting?

  • Hi Muckey

Too bad we moved from Worcester in the first part of the year. We now live up in North Reading, MA. We meet up in Sharon aswell and it would be great if you have a chance to come out the next time we meet. I too would be more than happy to come out to Worcester if you have an enclosed area. One of the other owners/B's from the Sharon meet up is about to leave Worcester if they haven't yet:( Let me know if your interested:D

Anyone near the Derry NH dog park let us know. We're there often and would love a meetup!

  • Ya same here, we are moving on Sunday, but if you want on Saturday we could meet at the Calahan State Park Dog Pond

  • I'm actually even further away, up in Westminster. I just figured Worcester was the closest.

Is that you Rachel, I heard a rumor that you got a Basenji.

I could probably do early saturday, I have a birthday party to go to in the evening….

  • Ya I was wondering if it was you Muck

  • If you want I'll be at Calahan Dog Pond around 2:30 3 ish Go to the framingham side and take the path all the way to the pond (about 1/4 mi)

  • We are in Holliston, but have yet to make it to the Sharron Dog park. We are occasionally up in Nashua too; however, we are mid kitchen remodel, which means weekends are DIY and only walks around the block.

foschatt, is the Derry NH park fenced in?

  • Yes, the Derry dog park is fenced in. The dog park also has agilty equipment there which is nice. If you have been to either, it seems a little smaller than Medway and Sharon Dog Parks. Also, Derry has sand instead of mulch.

  • I live in MA near the Fitchburg area. If anyone is doing a meet-up there, let me know. I'd love for Darwin to play with other Basenjis!

Worcester looks to be just about like my 1.5 hours or so to Boston - so I'd be up for a drive that way. I'm not familiar with that area (as I've only been in MA about a year) is there a fenced area/dog park in Worcester?

I'm down in New Bedford. But Beegin (my b) and Brady (my recent "just had to adopt him because of his story" beagle) would love anyone to play with. Beegin is 10 months and Brady is maybe 6 months so they like all puppies, dogs, anyone who wants to run and play.

  • Nashua NH has a nice fenced in park. Only open on Sunday 08:00-10:00

  • Where in Nashua? we are up there often, would love to go some time.

  • The Nashua dog Park is located on private property at this time. Fundraising is ongoing to have their own park in the near future. The location is at the end of Northwest Blvd at the site of Bellavance Beverage Company. It is nice & secure & kept real clean. They are open on Sundays only from 08:00-10:00 The cost is $3.00. Go on line to for more details. I know you need to bring certification of shots.

Let me know when you might be going. Hopefully we can get a nice day, my Calli is not impressed with the cold so we do not attend a lot in the winter unless we get a nice sunny morning.

  • I've been to the one at American K9 Country in Amherst, NH.

    http://www.americank9country.com/ak9c-dogpark.html

it's free, and open to the public year round.

  • Jessi76, thanks for the link, it looks great, can't wait to stop by some time.

@antigone said in Basenji Puppies in Qatar?: @debradownsouth I have a friend who lost 2 Austrailian Sheepdogs on a Delta Flight from LAX to JFK. Death in the Cargo Hold is more common than you think. Nope, they actually keep statistics. It is precisely as common as I think. Some Airlines treat Pets as Luggage and that is not right. So I must disagree with you regarding long Flights. The Vets recommend SEDATION for any pet that goes on a Plane. Nowhere to start with "treat as luggage" because what does that mean to you? How do you know? Is putting in cargo your idea of "treat as luggage" or is it something like abusive or uncaring? As for sedation on flying... you need new vets and to report those who tell you that. For anyone who thinks you are right, below is information based on facts: According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), sedating cats or dogs during air travel may increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. Except in unusual circumstances, veterinarians should not dispense sedatives for animals that are to be transported. https://www.avma.org/public/PetCare/Pages/Traveling-with-Your-Pet-FAQs.aspx Also ""Q: Should I tranquilize or sedate my pet for long flights? A: It is recommended that you DO NOT give tranquilizers to your pet when traveling by air because it can increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. Short-nosed dogs and cats sometimes have even more difficulty with travel. Visit our FAQs about short-nosed dogs and air travel for more information. Airlines may require a signed statement that your pet has not been tranquilized prior to flying. According to Dr. Patricia Olsen with the American Humane Association, "An animal's natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered under sedation and when the kennel is moved, a sedated animal may not be able to brace and prevent injury.""" FDA https://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/AnimalHealthLiteracy/ucm352635.htm Sedatives: While sedatives may make your pet seem less stressed during car trips, these medications also have a tendency to dull the senses and lessen your pet’s ability to react to the environment, which can be dangerous in an emergency. When traveling by car or by plane, avoid giving your pet any type of sedative. If you think Champ or Freckles really needs a sedative to travel, talk to your pet’s veterinarian before your trip. Airlines: https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/animals/procedures.html United supports the American Veterinarian Medical Association’s recommendation to not accept animals that have been sedated. United will not knowingly accept a dog or cat that has been sedated and accepts no liability for the death or sickness of an animal caused by any drug. PetAir UK Q. Can I sedate my pet before they fly? No. No and No. Those clever folks in the USA did a study on deaths of animals after flying and veterinary grade sedatives were implicated in around half of them, so it is banned. Secondly, there are no drugs which will work for the full length of the journey and no-one can guarantee how they will work with the air pressure changes and if they make your pets excitable or too sedated we don’t want that to happen. https://www.petairuk.com/faq-page#t16n175 I could post more but state by state vet assoc say the same thing.

I think Joan said she has talked to you before. We have 1 10 year old female from Indiana and I think a brother of your younger one - Bourbon who is also 1.5. Joan takes them to Snyder almost daily so if you plan to be there let us know when. Dave

Find a good positive reinforcement puppy class, like clicker training and you will both have fun. All of mine have earned at least a rally novice obedience title and love the training. There are some things that you should not expect of a basenji such as being outside off lead. They are sighthounds and must be on a lead or in a fenced area at all times. The biggest issue with a house with children is that the children must understand the door can never be left open. My inlaws have a terrible habit of wanting to stand in the doorway and talk as people leave. I have to shoo them outside so the dogs do not try to dart outside given the opportunity. We have had ten basenjis since our son was two, he is now 27 and the basenjis raised him.
