  • Thanks that makes me feel better about it. I dont know his exact size (and I cant measure him until he gets home from "Jail" :( ) But I know hes not fat! thats for sure!! lol

  • How long until they are fully grown?

Our older pair are both much bigger than the newer one, who is now about 15 months and about 75% the size of them. Our Male is 18" and about 23 pounds last time. The female is 17" and 21. THe young one is 15" or so, but I have not weighed her lately.

Also, where exactly do you measure? Just the level of their back right above the shoulder?

  • You measure from just behind where the neck joins the back, also call the withers like on a horse.

And 99% of the time their full height is usually by 6 to 8 months… they will "body" up but typically their height is just about done by 8 months. Their growth plates close typically before 1 yr and all mine have closed at 7 months.

Your 15 month B is most likely at full height....

  • Sahara is 16" and weighs anywhere from 21 to 25lbs. She is not a great eater, and her weight goes up and down depending on her mood. There are days she will only eat once a day, and she is mostly right at 24-25 or below. She has a very muscular build and looks slim and trim, wish I could say that, haha!!!!!

  • Serenjane is a bit overweight at 30 lbs., however she doesn't look fat. Can you tell she is spoiled? Too many treats.
Whenever I learn how to insert her picture I will. On my list of things too do.

  • @etzbseder:

This is far off topic with any of my other threads, and all the other ones I've seen, but I was wondering if there was any way to track the size (weights, and maybe heights) of people dogs. From what I remember seeing in many threads, there are a ton of dogs that are quite a bit bigger than the standard, and several that are smaller. I just have rarely come across posts of basenjis that were actually (weightwise only) the standard size anymore.

It seems to me that there are more dogs actually closer to the standard than not, with a few chunkies thrown in. :), and most have been closer to 16" than not.

  • Dallas is almost 7 months & weighs in around 18 lbs. :)

  • Seren Jane is abit on the chunky side at 30 lbs. Too many treats.

I think I already posted her weight on another thread, forgive me I am still learning to navigate.

  • It is always a good idea to keep your Basenjis in good healthly weight… overweight can lead to other health problems. That said, I like to keep young puppies (2 months to 5 months) with a little extra weight, just in case they get sick (and it is not always possible to do so, but I try and don't worry about them).. and the elders... a little heavier again in case of illness... By elders I am talking about over the age of 12... Here is a picture of my boy, OJ.. now 16 yrs, 9+ months... and in fact I am trying to get another lb on him....

  • What a handsome old gentleman. Yet another reason to love basenjis… I've never met a really old one (more than 7 years), but in pictures of old ones they still look so young.

  • I'm late to this…but Ruby is 17" tall and weighs 19lbs. Brando is 16.5" tall and weighs 23lbs. Both are super active and hard to keep weight on.

  • Eli dropped by the vets yesterday. He got a quick going over, weighed etc for a "Friendly" visit and charmed the pants off of everyone. They all think he's sweet and adorable. They haven't gotten to see the demon monkey side of him yet ;). At 7 months and 1 week he weighed in at 24.5 lbs. He is solid muscle though from all the running and gymnastics he does every day. I've never seen a dog do as many somersaults as he does.

  • Eli at 24.5 lbs and only 7 mos. Wow! Perhaps my Seren Jane not so big after all. She does a lot of chaseing squirels but no somersaults. I think its the treats though that are affecting her weight.

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

[URL removed] I used this when my boy was a baby and if he was underweight I would increase his food and if he was on the right track I would keep the same amount. It’s good to have a look at the dogs behind your pup to see how the dogs in his lines turned out full grown if they was compact, slim etc. I feed raw and used this guide FOR DOGS An adult dog needs around 2 – 3 % of their total body weight each day. To maintain your dog's weight 2.5% and to fatten up a skinny dog 3%. For a porky pooch it is recommended to reduce to 2% to help slim. Puppies may need up to need up to 8 - 10 % of their bodyweight to aid growth.

Our rescue now adopted Kell was 16.01 when we got him at 4 mos, now at 6 mos he is 29 lbs!!! But he is taller than all our other Bs, he is so active there is very little fat on him. He was on the thin side when he first got here and ate almost constantly for 2 weeks. Now he gets a small breakfast and a normal supper with the rest of the pack. We bred our own Bs in years past, and they do tend to tighten up after a year. As a pup, I am not going to put him on a "diet" at this time. As long as she is healthy, eats well, I do not think I would worry about it. Our 5 year old girl only recently went over 20 lbs, and we changed their dog food and all the adults have lost weight and look and feel much better I do believe. Enjoy!

I just weighed Otis, and this is after he ate breakfast..he now weighs 23.8lbs, and is looking trimmer for sure. His ribs are definitely right under the surface now, as supposed to a little squishy..the no-bacon, no-butter, no-cinnamon roll diet worked..He did however, with some help from our dachshund, Gus, get a hold of one of our roosters, Elmer, and hurt him bad..we had to put poor Elmer down. Now we have reinforced the fence, on the chicken side, so they can't get over and be a treat for the dogs..Boy was he remorseful after that ordeal..or at least that is how he came across. Thanks all for helping me with your inputs, much appreciated..
