My basenji turned on me :(

    I adopted my 7 year old Basenji in October of '08. She has never been violent or anything of that nature. She has always followed me around, and will lay right on top of me and sniff my face and lick my arms. She is really the sweetest thing. Well last night, we were laying on the couch, and I was petting her behind her ears like I ALWAYS do, and my boyfriend came and sat on the couch at my feet. Red started to growl, then she lunged and bit me right in the face. At first I thought she was protecting me when she was growling, but she turned and bit ME. She has only been around my boyfriend maybe 5 times, and she is with me every single day. WHY in the world would she do this? She's been to the vet a few times, and everything has checked out fine. Any answers or suggestions?

    Redirected aggression. You usually see it when dogs are on leash or on the other side of a window and will lash out at the dog standing next to them when they are upset by something.

    Hey eeeefarm, read that article you shared via link…..very interesting and enlightening! when one reads about spindle cells and the amygdala, one has to consider emotions to some degree in animals across the board! don't know about trees etc....???? 'nother forum ????

    Basenjis that can't stand other basenjis

    My previous males never had an opportunity to meet other basenjis (outside their breeder kennel) so don't know if the experience with my current female is "typical" or not. The first time she encountered another, it was a tri-color older female that was a real bitch and instantly got aggressive (now whenever they see each other its "hackles up"). The first time I took her to a lure coursing event, mine was friendly enough until a little blind female came up and bit her. The second time I took her to a LGRA event, a lady came up behind us (while mine was trying to potty) with her tricolor female and her dog attacked mine. So now hackles go up any time another female comes within shouting distance.

    an update-iam a huge wow player -and as ive been leveling in new zones it has cought milosh interest on its sounds and visuals- so lately he dosent turn his back on me as much but looks forward to hearing the sounds coming from the laptop….lol

    Move the crates to different rooms. The female won't be able to see what's going on. Give the male his food first, then feed the female a little later. Don't let them out of the crates at the same time.

    it is just socialization….my australian shepard was that way with men with facial hair because my dad and brother were always clean shaven....

    Since Beta's passing Caesar has stopped being active at home and just lays around in his little ball. He was always the playful one of the two. I have been taking him to work with me every day to spend more time together. He hangs out in the office with me and occasionally has play time with the shop dog. I have been taking him to the dog park on my hour lunch everyday and noticed a strange new behavior. He was attaching himself to every dog in the big dog section and was acting out of place standing by himself. I am sure he was reacting to the absense of Beta. They typically would hang together and inspect everything.I think he always guarded Beta because she was so timid at the park. Today when I took him, he was better about sniffing around on his own. It was just a sad moment yesterday and today a slight improvement to being on his own. I cant wait for him to be distracted by the puppy. I am sure he will show him all of his naughty tricks like opening the stainless trash can lid by stepping on the button…..
