• I had some questions regarding OFA. I am currently awaiting the results of the Fanconni test. (My check has been cashed yesterday). I came across a clinic in Ft. Collins, and am going to be getting Medjai's Eyes checked and was wondering what else would be most important, as I don't want to do too many now, because it's also the time of the year for his shots. There will be Hear,Eyes, Patella, Hips, and Full blood workups.

My main question was how do I get the results to the OFA, as I don't currently show a record for Medjai? Should/Can I wait until the Fanconni test results make it to the OFA, as I understand they should create a record for that result.

OFA recorded will be created when the Fanconi test is recorded to OFA. All the others will then be added. Hips can't be done till he is over 2yrs and at that time might as well do elbows also. Patellas can be done by your regular Vet when you have his shots updated. Hearing has never been an issue for Basenjis, so I would not do it… Full Blood work is not listed on OFA, but Thyroid panels are, which is an addition vial of blood and set to an OFA approved lab. Eyes would be good done now so you have a base line for the future and to identify any potential problems in any...

All the instructions for OFA and the recording of each of the tests are on the OFA site along with the required forms and fees.

  • Yeah, I misspelled it. it's actually HearT not hear(ing).

I did take a look on the site, but had some trouble finding the pages needed for the forms and fees. Is there anyway I could get you to post a link?

    Got ya, heart…

    Try this for forms...

  • I don't see one for eyes, how do you turn in the CERF?

  • The form for CERF is given to you at the exam. It is a carbon copy of the exam report with the filing form information printed on the back of the report. Be sure to bring Mejai's microchip number and AKC number with you to the exam so you can fill out the top portion of the form.

  • So, I got the CERF done His eyes were great. I was wondering before the clinic is done, should I do patellas, or anything else?

Patellas can be done during a regular office visit to your vet…

  • Now is a little late to go back anyway, but for the future, what other tests are good to do/know I know (and not just for Medjai) because I know the fanconi results, and I know to keep an eye out for PRA, but what else?

  • Any eye problems, such as excessive PPM, cataracts, coloboma's.. which will all show up on the CERF report. And it is just as important, especially with PRA to have a "family history" since it is late onset with no DNA test yet. Fanconi, Thyroid, Patellas, hips/elbow (usually done at the same time), are really the ones you want to make sure are done if looking at a pup.. (at least IMO). Heart is good to have, but not a huge thing is not done.. unless there happened to be a family history of possible problems. (has not been a problem in Basenjis over the years).
One of the biggest and best things you can look at is the age of pup's parents, grand parents, great grand parents and what is their age, how long did they live, what age did they die?…
My personal opinion is that I want to see dogs that are not being bred from babies... I don't like to see 3 generations that the oldest dog is only 6yrs old as great grand parents.. there is no way to really build a health pedigree based on very young dogs. When I bred Mickii, the sire of her pups was 14yrs old... and he live two years past that...
Kobey's Mom was 6 1/2 when he was born, as was his sire. The grand parents were 9, 10, 11, and 8 and the Great Grand Parents were 10,14,15,10,15,11,17 and 12 (all but one of the Great Grand Parents were still living, the 17yrs old had passed at 15)

  • I have a new question: How long does it take for the results from the fanconi test to appear on the OFA page, and also if I sent in the papers for Medjai's CERF, how do I get that to appear on OFA?

  • How long the results take to post on OFA for the Fanconi marker test is a bit variable. I would say that for most people it posts somewhere between 2-4 weeks after the email notification is recieved. They are also posted in batches so watch for other postings with the same Test Result Date as yours. If the batch posts and yours isn't there, then email OFA and let them know.

If you submit your CERF paperwork, the CERF results will automatically link to the OFA site. CERF sends an update to OFA about twice a month so again it is about 2-4 weeks for it to show up on the OFA site once the dog has an OFA page.
