Oh, that brings up a question I have. I am almost up for having to get Medjai his shots. Should I get him the rest of them at a different time than rabies or not.

Well I do with Charlie, and will as well with Zaire. I have heard from many on here that Bs are easily susceptible to the problems that can occur with rabies shots. Charlie is slightly allergic to them and needs Benydril

  • speaking of vaccinations… Zip got her rabies last week. I gave her a Benadryl and she doesn't seem to have reacted to it. On the certificate they gave me it says the shot expires 4/09. I know I said two or three times that what she needed was her three year rabies shot. Does it say 1 year on the sheet because it's a different shot or they're required to put that per state law?

I do separate them. I will sometimes give nasal bordatella with DHPP though. I never give Rabies and DHPP at the same time though. This has worked to avoid allergic reactions with my Bs.

I don't know how your state laws work. But in Oregon the first shot is a 1 year certificate. Once you get the booster for it they give you the three year shot. My understanding is that the vaccine is the same for both shots but that it is based on local laws for shot booster time.

That is how it works in Ohio as well 🙂

Zip should be with the 3yr shot? Maybe they just made a mistake? I am sure the Denise would have had her rabies before that… Did you have the records of her last rabies shot?

As I understand it... the first shot when a puppy is good for one year, the booster they get the next year is good for 3yrs.. and it is all the same vaccine, just repeated the next year. I would ask them about it?

  • I did have a form from Denise saying when her last rabies shot was given and when the next was due. So I had her get one per that sheet. Maybe I should have said booster instead of shot. But I would think that my saying "3-year rabies shot" repeatedly over the phone and at the vets office would have gotten the message across.

  • Is it possible that Hawaii has different regs? I know they are super SUPER strict about rabies because it doesn't occur naturally on the islands.

  • oh I am living in CA. I have left the nest as it were. And I went to college in SoCal. But born and raised on Maui. I'll always be a Maui Girl. 🙂

  • Oh, ooops! I guess I could have realized that if I looked to the right corner 🙂 Sorry about that!

  • @LiveWWSD:

Soo happy that we can now go to the dog park (though I will give her a couple of days to recoup first from the vaccines). I know Charlie has been chomping at the bit to get back out to the park. 😃

I hear ya. We have a great dog park within walking distance and it has been closed since 3/17/08 for reseeding. It won't open til the end of April. When I take Zip walking we pass by the intersection where we'd normally cross the street to go to the park. I can tell that when we pass there she's like "let's go this way!" and she kind of pauses, pulls a little toward the crosswalk. And to think I couldn't wait for the longer days to be able to take her there after work. Lame.

I think if I were you, I would call the office and them them they gave you the incorrect form with the incorrect dates, as the rabies should be good for 3yrs…. and yes, I agree.... repeatedly saying 3yr shot would qualify to get the message across....

  • so I think I was looking at the wrong exp date because the date listed on the form was the expiration of the vaccine, not how long it's good for once given. That's what I was told when I called. She assured me that it was the three year booster.

Well that's good.. better to check then not be sure…:)

  • Except for the rabies shot has anyone ever given their dog a vaccine shot. It's my understanding that we can. Would want to make sure the vaccine comes from a reputable place but I was thinking of possibly doing the Bordatella myself.

Bordatella comes in drops you put in the nose besides the injectable kind. And while I have done my own shots, I think it is good that they visit the Vet at least once a year for a check up…. there are things you can miss... and the Vet might pick up. I also recommend bloodwork done if not yearly then every other year till age 10, then for sure every year. And I have the baseline done somewhere between 6 months and 1yr, depending on "cash flow" at the time.

And all shots (with the exception of Bordatella) are now every 3yrs, so the cost is not like it was in years past when it was recommended that shots be updated yearly.

  • She has gone to the vet to receive her shots but after doing some research wonder if dogs are being over vaccinated. Here in Jackson, TN our shots are yearly. They don't offer any 3 year shots. This may be the downside of living in a smaller city. Up to this point she has not been boarded and except for spending time once a month with her basenji cousins she is not around many other dogs. We don't have a dog park. This is why I would question needing a Bordatella every 6 months.

It is the same shot as the one they gave for one year, just good for three. The standard now and has been for a few years (around here at least 6 or more) that they are covered for 3yr. Do some on line reseach about the recommendations and take them to your Vet…. you can start with Dr. Dodds... I think that you will find that most Vets are up to speed with the latest research and if not, they should learn...IMO.... and it might be a battle, but it is your dog...

And unless you are going to board in a kennel facility, I would not even bother with Bordatella.. only protects on like 3 to 5 stains and there are hundreds.... I show mine all over and have not used Bordatella for over 15+ yrs.
