• So, Easter started sweetly enough with the kids waking up to baskets of candy and stuffed animals. Then we went to Early Mass, and came home to get ready for company and a yummy dinner.

    Things went terribly wrong. For some reason, the marshmallows on top of my sweet potatoes caught fire. I mean BIG FIRE. Darren, thinking our fire extinguisher was CO2 based, used it in the oven. The CHEMICAL spray from our NOT CO2 based fire extinguisher, went everywhere in AND out of the oven. The whole stove side of the kitchen was a mess. We had to toss out the raisen sauce for the ham, a whole skillet full of green beans w/bacon, two pumpkin pies, and had to trim off the whole outer layer of the ham – the part with the yummy brown sugar glaze on it.

    It was….. interesting. We did have a good enough dinner -- what was left of the ham, potato salad, jello w/fruit cocktail, rolls, green beans that I'd quickly zapped in the micro, and apple pie.

    No one went hungry. AND I don't a bunch of left-overs filling up my fridge! LOL
    Fortunately, the only guests were my niece and her husband, and our old neighbor's parents -- you know, people who have a sense of humor about such things and who were pretty content with what we had. Marlene said, "You should have asked ME to bring the potatoes". LOL I told them they got quite a deal -- dinner AND a show!

    I hope you all had a glorious Easter!

  • Oh gosh!! I hope no one was hurt. At least Jazzy had NOTHING to do with this chaos this time around 🙂

  • I don't know if I should laugh…....you have a great sense of humor JM........I'm glad it wasn't a total disaster.

  • yikes, glad everything turned out in the end

  • Wow - lt looks like Easter started out beautifully in the 1st pic - love the table and baskets photo. The poor marshmallow dish is so sad. 😞 I can sympathize with you - Last Thanksgiving - I burned the garlic bread (real bad) - smoke encompassed the entire house! Opened the windows on that bone-chilling day to air out the smoke. No one complained either - it happens… Glad no one got

  • I have had that happen but maybe not to the extent of burning as you had. The problem is the sugar in the marshmellows, especially if the oven was on broil or high heat. Next time stand there while the marshmellows brown, doesn't take long, and they also expand so don't use too many. I use the mini marshmellows, they work best. If they burn again, just scrape them off, (comes off easy) and add more, I have done them many times for Thanksgiving. The problem is also that you get so busy trying to finish up dinner that your forget and leave them in the oven too long. Remember, stand and watch, It works!!!!!

  • @JazzysMom:

    Oh, nummers! I just love anything blackened! LOL! 😃 😃 😃

    Glad everything turned out well!

  • Glad everything worked out okay.

    While reading it, I had a cartoon bubble: your two beasties raiding the easter baskets trying to get the stuffed bunnies, while all the humans were battling stove fire.

    I know! I know! I swear, I knew what I was doing! I've been baking sweet potatoes like that for about 30 yrs! I use a LOT of the mini-marshmallows because they DO expand and cover the entire top like a crust. The kids love it, and it ensures that every kid gets golden marshmallows with their pototoes {remember, I have six kids and there are always guests who want marshmallow topping too,LOL}

    I don't know what happened – I did step away for a second to grab a basket for the rolls, and my dd {20 yrs} and niece {32 yrs} were by the oven. DD yelled, "Mom, the oven's on fire!!!".

    Crazy. 😃

    LOL, I did worry a bit about the stuffed animals earlier, but at the time of the fire, the B's were outside!
