New JORs

Basenji Training
  • Today we headed out for some NOTRA racing. It was a beautiful day! Miss Sophie needs some more muzzle training but I think she is going to have a lot of fun once she starts to ignore the muzzle. Rally also needs some more muzzle training but did alright and is starting to actually beat other dogs instead of just fussing with her muzzle.

Rio and Cole both completed their JOR, Junior Oval Racer titles today and Rio picked up one ORC, Oval Racing Champion, point bringing her to 4.5 points out of the 12 she needs. The Junior Oval Racer title is equivalent to an AKC Senior Courser title. It requires a dog to complete all 3 programs of 4 race meets. Rio also picked up another leg toward her SOR, Senior Oval Racer, which is a challenging title because it requires a dog to place in the top 50% of racers at 6 race meets.

My mom's boy Levi picked up 3 points towards his ORC and needs only 3 more points to finish his championship. Barb Sauceda's girl Nestle picked up 3 points and finished her ORC so over all a big day for everyone!

  • Congrats to all! :)

  • It sounds like a good time was had by all! Congrats!

  • Congratulations to you all!!!!

  • I love to see the hounds run.

Can't wait to hear about your dogs runs.

  • What a fabulous weekend! Congratulations!

Take it REALLY REALLY slowly. Be sure to make good things happen when they are together and getting along. It took me 7 months to get my 4 yr old basenji rescue (who has a very high prey drive) to coexist with an old cat. If there is a bad experience, it can set everything back months, so be very careful to set up good experiences and avoid bad experiences.

Hire yourself a behaviorist immediately…. should have done this when you first knew about the new addition to the family.

Endeavor, you represent the dangerous part of CM. People without a lot of experience don't see with the same eyes. He is actually borderline abusive, imho. He is dangerous to the dogs and to the audience. His techniques will eventually get someone killed and certainly dogs euthanized. Rather than reinvent the wheel, how about you read this thread :) http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=9598 At the very least, the OHIO STATE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE on professionals' opinions of Milan. :) http://vet.osu.edu/education/quotes-experts

I'm not sure, in your situation, I would leave the dog outside until he made the decision to come in. It almost sounds as if the dog had bad experiences inside at the previous home and outside was the only place he could stay or maybe was forced to stay; anyway you now have to counteract all that. All the good points have been made by others, now you have to put them all together. Do not let the dog outside without a long lead (long closthesline or whatever); when you say come reel in the lead and treat and praise. You have to be consistent too; use the same word, treat immediately, etc. Also I don't think I would leave the dog loose outside until this is overcome. If possible I would also take the time to be outside with your dog (still on the lead) and play with him and praising and treating for any good interaction he does. Also you might want to have a special treat just for the come command and for entering the house. He does not get this treat until he comes and/or he enters the house - but make it something really special that is not given except for this purpose.

@snorky998: Congratulations!! Has Tillo been showing lately? How long before Lycia goes home? I'm sure Tillo's going to miss her. Thanks you all for the congrats :) Tillo hasn't been shown lately, he just turned 27 months so he can now win his last CAC for his Dutch Championship.. His first big show is at the end of June :) Lycia will leave the second or third week of April. Tillo will probably miss her very much and hate me for it :(
