New puppy - want to guess what kind

Off Topic
  • @Ninabeana26:

    Hm….is it a Thai Ridgeback?

These are TRD's (puppies, and great pic shows all four colors)

  • Retract my guess NGSD is not on the list of FSS

I'm guessing the Portuguese Podengo also medium size and smooth coat

  • Yea…I was way off. I will also guess Podengo!

  • No fair Andrea - you probably have been bored to tears by hearing me talk about this. Yes she is a Portuguese Podengo Grande Smooth. She will be the only one of that size in the country - god knows how I'll get a male to breed her too in a couple of years. This size in particular needs some help by folks who understand primitive breeds. She is from the only litter bred in 3 years. We are trying to find more registered dogs in the big Boar hunting packs but it's slow going. IN any event I thought it was important to bring over one of this size so we have all 3 in the country.

I am a little worried about where she'll fit in the pack but she'll fit somewhere!

The Podengo comes in 3 sizes and 2 coat types (smooth and wire) the Medio size looks like a more African look basenji with a straighter tail. The wire medio was in movies like Zeus and Roxanne (the dolphin and the dog) thw wire hair dog in Secondhand Lions, and the dog in The Lake House.

  • Actually, no…I didn't know :) But I *thought it was a podengo...but to make sure, I checked the FSS registry to makes sure they were on it :)

Sounds like fun! Can't wait to see her in person!

  • Can't wait for the pictures…and the stories...when she arrives.

  • So far the big story is only send money and wait for dog - I can't believe I am doing this sight unseen - but I've been following the puppy pix for a long time and also her mothers development.

I am especially interested because in Portugal most times these animals are raised outside (hunting dogs you know) these have been raised in a home so I'm hoping that I get something that will work in my life.

  • WOW! Can't wait to see more pics. I really like the look of them. (Esp the wire coats)

  • What a cute pup, very basenji-like. I predict tons of fun.

    Anne in Tampa

  • Well she is in the US - thanks to Sally Wuronos of Sonbar basenjis who braved a raging blizzard to go to Chicago yesterday to wait for her arrival today and to Pat Wand - who let Sally crash at her place in Milwaulke WI. Playing in Pat's kitchen and trying to get the puppies to play with her. They report she has a lot of basenji play behaviors.

I won't get to see her until tomorrow :( BUT at least she is only 1 state away and safe in the US.

I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to the basenji podengo meeting - and I might just go over to a training center and try that on neutral ground…... you know like I tell everyone!

  • Woo Hoo congrats!!

  • Congratulations! I bet you can't wait to get your hands on her :) Hope all goes well!

  • She is hear as so basenji like in her play - I've only introduced her to 1 of my males and they are getting along fine. I however have a nasty cold so I'm mostly sleeping and she is having to be in a pen unless I can watch her. She also has the beginnings of a UTI so she is piddling everywhere - which has not been fun so her movement in my house is a bit restricted until we get a handle on it.

My grandma died at the age of 62 from breast cancer, mom had it at age 40, and I was diagnosed and had at age 42 a double mastectomy, hysterectomy, 6 mo. of chemo, 7 weeks of radiation, and will probably take anti hormone pills the rest of my life. C A N C E R sucks. My husband was diagnosed 7 years ago at age 39 with a RARE appendix cancer that has no cure and is struggling with the affects almost constantly. DRIVE FOR A CURE! We appreciate your efforts and great things can happen when people work together! Very, Very sorry for your loss.

@Ninabeana26: I swear websites like this just increase the chances of puppy mills & BYBs. That is so true. This is why it is so important that it is not only responsible breeders that have websites directing people on how to find a responsibly bred puppy but also that responsible owners have websites. Every person can help battle puppy mills by helping other people find a responsible breeder. The more websites are out there directing people to websites like http://www.basenji.org/learn http://kineticbasenjis.tripod.com/Information/Buying_a_Basenji.html http://basenji.org/?q=node/30 http://www.basenjiclubofcanada.com/BCOC-BreedersDirectory.html Any links to the National Club's Breeder Directory and educational websites help to increase the chances that buyers will not go to a BYB or puppymill.
