Long car trip - tips?

    I have a very long road trip coming up (LA to Portland) and I'll have my two pups with me, riding in the back seat. Any advice on car safety, feeding, breaks … ??

    I drove from Baltimore to Oklahoma City with two boxers in a Dodge Dakota, lol, for us we kept their feeding schedules the same. We stopped about every 2 hours to stretch legs and potty breaks, walk around a little. Our guys ate at 7 in the morning and 7 at night so it was easy to keep their schedule on track.

    Are you stopping over night?

    Back seat as in crated? or doggy seat belts? Please don't let them ride loose…

    Feeding is not necessary, usually will cause more problems with motion sickness, mine that travel all the time to shows, I never feed them while we are driving, but I do give them bully sticks to chew if they want... normally they sleep the entire time (at least till you slow down to get gas or food for yourself..:D ... potty breaks at the same time that you gas or feed yourself...is fine... for me the faster I get there the better...

    I have a seat belt for the smaller one but not for the larger dog, and don't have a crate for either. Should both be put in separate crates? And if so, should they be Veri-Kennel (hard plastic) type crates? I was planning on buying collapsible crates.

    If you have a regular car I'd say just seat belt them both, thats how mine are. I don't like the idea of putting a crate in the backseat of a car (just me) because it limits visibility.

    Either or… but please make sure they are secure in a crate or seat belt... my personal choice would be each in their own crate.. I use the wire so there is not a problem with visibilty for them or me... And with belts you need to make sure that they don't chew their way out.

    Regardless it is very, very dangerous to have an animal loose in the car... god forbid you would have an accident.. or stop someplace and have one of the bolt from the car...

    I have traveled up and down the West Coast... and mine just sleep .....

    Mine just sleep also. When I stop for gas, they awaken and we take them out to potty. Otherwise, no stops…. they sleep the whole time, really.

    You need a "stand" command for more advanced obedience. Also, it is good to teach sit from standing and from down. Many (most?) dogs understand "sit" as an action, not a position, so they may know it from standing but don't have a clue when they are lying down. :)

    That's funny. The other day I took EL D to the city park nearby and there's a couple of ponds. EL D was chasing after the frogs along the shore when we came to an area with less shore weeds. He went right around the weeds to get to the frogs as they came out the other side – yes you guessed it, he didn't realize the water was there (really shallow only a few inches). For just a few seconds he was still keyed on the frogs and didn't realized he was in the water. Then it was just like Colbey's reaction - OMG!

    I love the Q-tip obsession! We discovered a hilarious game…my husband goes on one side of a closed dog and Darwin and I are on the other. then my husband drags the Q-tips around under the door or randomly pokes it out. Darwin goes crazy trying to get the Q-tip!

    I have to agree with that agilebasenji, prong collars are not for Basenji's that I have ever seen, however, food seems to motivate them much better!

    I tried a harness too but got too complicated to undo and my dog kept chewing it. Gave that up and she lies in a transport cage that takes all the back of my car. Had no choice after one seat belt has been dammaged as well as whatever was in the car!. When she is in her "car home", she just goes to sleep or sits up and looks at the road, cars and other things she would like to run after (the back of my car has a large rear window so, plenty to look at during a long journey). No room left in my car but a good solution for my Basenji, when I open the door of her "car home", she waits until I have put the leash on and then jumps out, well attached. If I take her with me in a friend's car, she sits on the back seat quietly BUT no way, can I leave her alone in that car, she would destroy everything and pee on the seats !(from past experience, not much fun for my friends)
