Thyroid problems and Seizures

    Would love to hear from folks about their dog having thyroid problems and seizures. I have read from some online sources that if our dog is not receiving soloxine, they may be at risk for Seizures. Has anyone else found this to be true. My Redje is 12 and isnt on soloxine, but another off brand.

    what ever you can provide me for input re: seizures and your basenji and any complications with Thyroid meds and seizures would be most appreciated. :D

    I have never heard of seizures, however it is pretty will noted that the "real" soloxine is the best thing to use. I had a generic brand and we could not get my oldest boys levels where they should be ever, changed to Soloxine and boom… within days you could see the difference. And I have never seen complications with Thyroid meds (at least not Soloxine).... The price difference is not that much, especially if you get the precription from the Vet and send it to places like Omaha Vaccine Co. There is one med that is said to be pretty much as good as soloxine, I think it is called ThyroTabs? But I am not sure about that.

    My previous beastie developed thyroid problems (and it took the vet a long time to figure it out too) but he wasn't put on soloxine. I can't remember the name of the meds but it started with a b. He never had any siezures and he was on the meds for probably five years or so.

I wasnt sure about the food, some say too much protein, some say that protein are good for acidic urine... i will loose the vegetables for a fee days (Fred will be happy) and keep treating UTI with antibiotic and D-manoze. Kibble is a problem because he is straching his mouth and ears when eating it, That’s why we are on raw diet. He eats horse and lamb meat and he likes green peas so that was his main vegetable. I hope the problem was in the peas 😂🤣.. Thank you... we are going tomorrow on x ray to see If there are any Stones...

    Right, but "not uncommon" is kind of evasive wording, if that's the official stance on the problem. Kind of like "It has been known to occur…" But Shiba breeders, by and large, aren't registering thyroid information with OFA, unless there's some mistake with the chart of statistics sorted by breed. MSU does have numbers which suggest that it's not common with Shibas, which I think makes it a low priority for Shiba breeders. But just from what I'm gathering anecdotally, it's definitely something worth looking into, especially for shibas with allergies, which a LOT of them are plagued with. I'm not a member of any breed clubs, so I can't say with authority if the stance on thyroids is changing. I think it's generally of low concern, at the moment, compared to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, eyes -- which good breeders ARE testing for.

    @ljsabo: My B does the same thing. He will start peeing and not finish and then quickly lick himself. He has done this for years but otherwise seems healthy and very normal. My friend who has a 9 month old b puppy stated hers does this as well so it could be a B thing?? No, he licks the pee as it's coming out and if I turn his head away he stops and walks away.

    I only just realized where you live, has he been tested for Valley Fever? Here are some of the symptoms of disseminated Valley Fever: ? lameness or swelling of limbs ? back or neck pain ? seizures and other manifestations of central nervous system swelling ? soft swellings under the skin that resemble abscesses ? swollen lymph nodes under the chin, in front of the shoulder blades, or behind the stifles ? non-healing skin ulcerations or draining tracts that ooze fluid ? eye inflammation with pain or cloudiness Here is a link to a full article on Valley Fever, http://www.vfce.arizona.edu/Content/Documents/Valley%20Fever%20in%20Dogs%20for%20PDF.pdf I know there is at least one person on the forums that had a dog with disseminated Valley Fever.

    Rascal has some serious stomach issues. The last time we fell off the wagon and didn't monitor her food intake well she developed pancreatitis. One piece of information our vet gave us, that I've begun to follow religiously, is to check the fat content in all of your treats and food. For a sensitive stomach it should be around 4-6 percent. Anything more is hard on the digestive tract. After checking most of the treats in the food aisle, and believe me I have, you'll see that the range falls anywhere from 4 up to 16 percent fat or more.
