I think they know my boyfriends car!

Basenji Talk
  • So I've noticed for a while that when my boyfriend pulls up into the driveway, Tayda and Lenny will get all excited and start running around. Back in Michigan I was the only one that used my driveway so it didn't seem that unusual that they'd get excited when someone pulled in.

Now in NY, I share a driveway with several other cars, and lots of cars use my driveway to turn around (I live at the end of a dead end street). Last night, my boyfriend drove into the driveway and the dogs started jumping around and running back and forth. BUT, they don't do it when any other cars pull into the driveway! It was dark out last night, so the only thing I can figure is they can somehow tell the sound of his car from other cars…

Just as I've been typing this 2 cars have pulled into the driveway to turn around and they could care less...

    They're so smart! :)

  • My guys can "smell" a friend coming… ggg Years ago Maggii and Mickii's breeder who live up the street from me would stop at my house to dump the tanks on their RV... My boy OJ, loves Ken and always knew when he pulled up.. and not by sight only... one day we were in the back yard when he started going nuts.. running around, nose stuck up in the air... and low and behold up pulls Ken in the RV....

  • My dogs all know when people they love drive up. And Gypsy {non-B} also knows when my brother, whom she hates, drives up. She'll hear his truck before I do and run and hide. [And no, I don't know why she feels that way about him.], yet when another brother drives up, she goes nuts waiting at the door for him.

  • My dogs knew my ex-boyfriend's truck. It was so sad after we split up, and Pepper (who was originally his dog) would run to the window whenever she heard a truck that sounded like his and then be so disappointed when she realized it wasn't him…..she would look for him out the window for months afterwards......she finally seemed to give up and deal with the loss....that really was the hardest part of splitting up with that boyfriend.

  • TL,

Your B's are good judges of character, they must really love and trust your boyfriend. How great that they are so excited to see him!

  • hey tayda, where in NY are you?

  • Hey Gooby, Im in Irvington on Hudson…. where are you?

Thanks for all your help! As I mentioned previously, it was the trainer that said there may be some basenji in this dog. We had never heard of basenjis, so it's been interesting to learn more about them, whether or not she has any in her. Thanks again for your input!

I tried a harness too but got too complicated to undo and my dog kept chewing it. Gave that up and she lies in a transport cage that takes all the back of my car. Had no choice after one seat belt has been dammaged as well as whatever was in the car!. When she is in her "car home", she just goes to sleep or sits up and looks at the road, cars and other things she would like to run after (the back of my car has a large rear window so, plenty to look at during a long journey). No room left in my car but a good solution for my Basenji, when I open the door of her "car home", she waits until I have put the leash on and then jumps out, well attached. If I take her with me in a friend's car, she sits on the back seat quietly BUT no way, can I leave her alone in that car, she would destroy everything and pee on the seats !(from past experience, not much fun for my friends)

She looks very sweet, whatever her parentage. We had a lab for 12 years. Sweet mild-mannered dog, a little needy and shed year-round. But great off leash, unlike the curlytails. Labs do tend to be mouthy and need something to chew on more than many breeds, but if she's older (older than 3) she may be beyond that. Either way, good luck with your new friend. Does she have a name yet?

I use a car harness with My isZi because if I don't she wants to sit on my shoulders and it makes it very hard to drive. I have no idea why she wants on my shoulders even if I'm sitting at the desk on the computer she thinks she has to be on my shoulders. I guess because her ancestor's were carried that way?

I don't think I could have watched it. I was crushed as it was. I enjoy the animals around our yard and if I could catch the loose cat I would remove it. As much as I realize it is their instict, I still would freak out My wife had the same reaction and was really upset by it, she even resented the dog. We tried to catch them but you know you just can't catch a basenji, yet alone one after a bunch of rabbits. As much as I dislike rabbit & other vermin in my yard, I don't want to kill them personally or by our dogs. If a owl comes by during the night thats OK, it's natures way. You can't yell or be mad at a dog doing what it was intended to (my wife). People love to humanize their pets, but really they are animals and preditors. He was old tired and slow but chasing the bunny invigorated him - I swear he smiled for a week. Our dog is a timmid scaredy Basenji and she was he same way after that. I did wonders for her ego, she was so proud. I was happy for her.
