Hide and Seek Basenji

Basenji Talk
  • Does anybody else have a basenji that plays hide & seek? Booger plays hide & seek with me. I throw a squeaky toy down the stairs. He goes and retrieves it (sometimes he plays fetch!) while I go hide. He drops the toy where I threw it from, and then runs around the house looking for me. He won't stop until he finds it, and he's gotten VERY GOOD at it! I'm running out of hiding places. He won't play with anybody else. My boyfriend tried one day, but whenever he threw the toy, Booger brought it right back to me & looked at me like "Well you didn't hide very well. Sitting on the couch is a dumb hiding place!"
    Any other bs do this?

  • Ok, I thought I was the only crazy one. Squiggy and I play hide a seek. I have a circular style house and we chase each other and stop and hide and then jump out at each other. We had behind stuff and jump out when the other gets close. Yeah, I just admitted that :p

  • OK - I have fun hiding behind walls, and when Duke tippy toes around looking for me and just before he sees me - I ROAR like a monster to scare him. Sounds kind of mean, but he really likes it. It almost always gets him to run a B500. I can't do it all the time - I try to make it an unpredictable event. :D :D

  • My dogs play hide 'n' seek the EXACT same way- throw the toy in the other room, they go fetch while I go hide… and like you said- they have gotten very good. We make it harder by turning the lights off and hiding in the dark. My favorite is to hide in the closet with the clothes so they have to look down to see if there's any feet... lol... And of course in the shower behind the curtain. And when they find me, of course I have to jump out and give them a victorious AHHHH! and they do the B500 and go get the toy again. So cute! We've even gotten to the point where when we come home, we open the door to the crate but tell them to "wait". So they sit in their crate while we go hide. When we call out "OKAY!" they come flying out and have to find us. But instead of roaring at them, we give them the smushies and lots of rubs! :) This is one of my favorite things about them. So cute, so interactive.

  • I do this with EL D but without the fetch part. He really likes it and often it does cause the start of the B-500. I'll have to try it with one of his favorite toys.

  • My husband does that with Nala - it is so funny!!

Hollie and I do this exact same thing, only usually at work!! Shhh don't tell the boss. ;)

Hollie's gotten smart at chasing after me, she'll stop, turn around to head me off in the next room!!!

  • @BDawg:

    we give them the smushies

Okay I thought I was crazy but I guess I'm not… I like to smush Booger's face to bring out all the cutesy wrinkles and I say "Shmoosh your fashe" (smoosh your face). I don't think he loves it, but at least he tolerates it.

  • BDawg-that's a GREAT game to play when you come home :D :D Altho I don't think mine would stay in the crate & wait for me to hide LOL LOL LOL :D :D

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
